Hi,

I'm in the market for a 330i SE touring. I've seen a 2000my with 140k miles in it but a full service history.

It seems to have decent spec. Leather and so on.

Now as long as everything checks out, I.e its not a proper heap. What would it be worth roughly?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Thanks guys, no I haven't got reg. number yet but will get it.

It had rust on front arches but I think this is pretty common?

Is it E46? What reg plate? 5 or 6 speed?

It's a 2000MY so it can only be a 5 speed E46.

I managed to negotiate £2K insurance payout for a 2000 MY 328i a few weeks ago; there was nothing decent around that I would consider buying under £1800 frown

How well do these cope with big miles?

This one has done 140k but has a full history..... Worried about auto box and engine letting to in first 5k mile so have it!!!

I've a B3 touring, effectively based on the same car, using the same gearbox with a couple of tweaks. Mine's just ticked over 140k and with a fastidious service record. The gearboxes are good for big miles, as long as you ignore the bullst from BMW saying these are sealed for life. I think in Germany they now recommend gearbox oil changes every 100,000km, I've just done one change about 6k ago, and will do another in a couple of months to get more of the oil changed (it can't all be done in one change).

The engine's are great, good for much bigger miles than you're on, but as with the gearbox servicing and regular maintenance are key. Without that I wouldn't touch with a barge-pole but I'd hope yours is ok. The various sensors on them can play up but they're not expensive to replace.

Ok thanks for the reply! I'm hoping given that it all works now that if I change all fluids now it should last abit longer!

I've read up about them loosing reverse and needing new gearboxes...

It's a 12 year old car, 140k isnt big miles its normal miles. I'd be more concerned about it coping with being 12 years old than the mileage. It'll be largely fine but you must be prepared to throw money at it fromt ime to time. The autobox is on borrowed time.

They have a finite life, like anything. 10-12 years isn't bad! Once you've had it rebuilt it'll last another 10-12 years.

Yes but how likely is it going to need that.... 100% or below 50% chance....

I wouldn't want to be buying a £1500 car and spending the same again instantly on a rebuild for the gearbox! If I got 10k out of it before it would be going in the bin and replaced with another.

I realise they are getting old now and with that the chance of issues increase.

If you want a 1500 quid car and no risk of having to spend money on it then I'd suggest a 12 year old BMW 330i is probably not the best place to start looking. As for the risk of the gearbox going its obviously not 100%, probably 50/50 I guess?

Do you just want a cheap no hassle car? Buy something else.

Cooling systems are another weak spot on these - Radiators bow at the bottom, Electronic thermostats stick open and water pumps have plastic impellers than can break off.

The engines though are fantastic.

The ATF fluid to do a change is expensive although if you shop around you can get the proper stuff at a bearable price, the filter is available from ECP but you will need a £12 Autobox sump gasket which is dealer only.

Mines an 03 on 75k and it still feels like a new car.

Apparently they have very awkward to get at rear metal brake pipes which rot and are tricky( see expensive ) to replace due to access issues.

At anywhere from £2k - £3k its still a lot of car for the money
