I read this and was so angry.

It is just devastating all round but so so uneccessary. This dog should not have been able to get access to the baby to do this.

My guess is no proper introductions were done causing a jealous/ fear based response (a fairly educated guess due the many conversations I have with clients). Having been in the position of having a newborn and middle age dog living together I know what I did to ensure this situation could not occur.

It is just so upsetting all round, more than I can actually describe.

It's heartbreaking frown

We will never know if they did the right introductions, if the baby was left alone with the Dog or if the Dog just snapped at the baby in her arms, or what frown

Lets be honest here, JRs do snap, like all small dogs they can be a very nippy breed frown Ours was a vicious little bugger (no amount of training helped frown but we loved him & managed it - he never hurt/bit anyone), far more so than the Dobie (and she had been ill treated & dumped on land by the side of the M42 - where we rescued her from). One of my cousins is the most laid back dog you have ever met (apart from cats), the other they had to get rid of frown

Terrible story.

There does seem to have been a lack of the usual hysteria that normally accompanies such story's. Where's the devil dog hype? What happened to calls for the breed being outlawed? ...oh, hang on; JR's are so cute and this is just a terrible, tragic accident and not the work of Beelzebub in disguise.

Indeed. Had it been a staffy we'd not have heard the end of it yet.

Tragic however for the family but I simply do not understand why the dog was PTS.

It's the law isn't it, any dog that attacks and kills/mutilates has to be PTS? Or that's always been the case. Unless your a postman.

Sad story either way.

It's not law that the dog is PTS. Interesting point that. There is a presumption for destruction if it entails the Dangerous Dogs Act (in a public place), but this is often not enforced once it's gone through the courts.

I was interviewed for this on BBC, Sky and ITN TV as I was on site and live half hour down the road. A devastating case for the parents/owners. I didn't know the mum was 19 years old.
