Hi,

I currently own an MR2 mk2 and as much as I love it to death I could do with more seats and space.
Due to financial constraints I can't keep a hold of it and buy another motor.
And from the hassle of going car free for a while might be a bit of a stretch as my other car has only 2 seats so not really an option.

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea, hopefully from experience or trade of what I could realistically get and probably more importantly, would a trader actually be interested?

And as a second thought, would it be easier to move on if I had original wheels? After the originals I had were stolen.

its a rev4 with about 88k, full service history, all the receipts and mot. original bar aftermarket wheels but 15inchers in keeping with the style of the car (Not Halfraud specials).

Many thanks.

tbh I think the value you'd get for trading it in would be more than offset by the extra cost of buying from a dealer.

You'd be better off buying the new car privately and then selling the MR2 afterwards by putting it on an ebay auction.

I don't think a dealer would be interested unless you are buying a very expensive car then they would give you a good price instead of a discount.

I own a rev 4 and my personal view is that the standard wheels look much better than after market ones. Rev 4 wheels had a mirror type finish which is hard to come by but refurbished rev 3 wheels will look almost as good.

Your mileage is quite low, but condition will be everything if selling privately.
Poor examples go for a few hundred pounds, but the best examples can ask up to £4-5k if you're prepared to wait for an enthusiast owner.

MR2 owners club will be a good place to advertise and get more info.

Forgot to mention when I went from my rev1 to the rev 4 a few years ago I had a simliar dilemma.

I wanted to trade in at the dealer wher I bought the rev 4 so I always had one car (not two cars or no car) but he "did not want to insult me with a low offer". So I ended up having two cars whilst I sold the old one privately.

I got a good price but it took a month or two and I had to insure both cars.

The car had to be insured by me even though a prospective purchase would have their own insurance.

Changing cars is always hassle.

About 4 years ago I was looking at the new VW Scirocco. I had a mk2 MR2 Turbo to trade. The salesman said I would be lucky to get £1000 trade-in value and recommended I sell private.

They're 15-20 year old cars, and traders don't like them sat on their forecourts when people are now all about crash safety, economy, keeping up with the Jones'.

Advertise it on here, post ads on MR2OC, IMOC, etc. and keep an eye on a few replacements should you make a sale so you won't be carless for long.

EDIT: as for original wheels, you should be able to get a tired set for around £50, and a bit of rattle-can silver will have them looking tip top again. Don't put them on, but offer them with the car. That way you're offering something for both the purists and the modders.

Sorry but if your trading in a car that old, it will go straight to an auction and you'll be offered auction money for it.
Yours looks clean and tidy - good colour too

at a guess - if you trade it in for a franchise dealers, probably £800 - £1200

Nasty isnt it. I lost 6k on my last car and only owned it for 18 months (Jag XKR on a 1999)

This. Not worth it. when trading in my last mx-5 against my new one, even though paying top dollar for the new car, the dealer would only stretch to less than half what I could get the car privately - I didn't want the hassle of waiting weeks for the car to sell at it's correct worth on the private market (that, and these days you can't just un-insure a car you have to sorn it etc which causes nightmares for test drives) so I literally knocked a few hundred off what it's worth, whacked it on ebay and it was sold and picked up in less than a week, so I was never car less - best way to do it in my opinion!

I think you're being a bit optimisitic suggesting a 95 Caribbean Blue Rev 3 n/a will fetch £4-5k!

I didn't see the full spec of the car in the post, hence the wide price range from hundreds to thousands.

As above, you'll be lucky to get anything reasonable for it, but its a low mileage car for its age, and if corrosion hasn't set in (quite a few mk2's suffer from this now), then you may get between £1-2k selling it to privately.. The dealer will prob account for ~£500 from it putting it through an auction.

I paid £3.5k for my excellent condition Rev4 just over 5 years ago, but its worth sub £1k now realsitically now there some areas of corrosion.. Good track car for someone with a bit of work :-)

I'd love to get £4k for it!
But being realistic I think circa 1.5k is about right? Probably more to 1.4 but I can but hope and haggle.

Given the response I may keep my eyes open for some original wheels. I had originally planned to keep the ones I had until some **** decided to smash the shed open an knick 'em, so that if/when I sold it I could include them in the sale as the replacements while not garish wouldn't be to everyones tastes.

I think you're right though, selling privately, though irritating depending on the amount of time it takes to sell and to then pick up a replacement, will be the best way. Though given how I've kept it and its history, owner club stuff etc it should be a bit easier than trying to sell the usual mr2 heaps that I probably ended up seeing myself some 18months ago when I bought this. And as something more inline with the idea of family saloon is on the cards as a replacement - not too long to wait without wheels for a ten a penny replacement.

Again, thanks.
