My wifes car got a puncture at the weekend and in the journey to buy a replacement wheel/tyre we ended up buying a Land rover discovery 4 biglaugh

So we now need to sell her old car.

Looking for the best mechanism to sell it (right blend between hassle free and fair price)

I am not interested in autotrader and the endless calls... (unfortunately my experaince of PH classifieds is not much better - sorry PH)

So I'm guessing this leaves us with:-

- WBAC (never used this route before, also I am not sure if my wifes car is a "retail car" i.e less than 5 years old and below 100k miles, therefore I imagine they might bid ridiculously low just to honour their mission statement, as they won't really want the car)

- eBay, no reserve, 1p start (i have done this a few times on cars ranging from £1k to £20k and in the main it has gone well however every year it seems to be getting harder and harder to sell on ebay I.e. filtering out the time wasters)

Is there any other routes, should I just ring/drive round the local used car garages ?
Low price on gumtree ??

I have avoided posting details so not to breach any rules on ads within posts. (not the car in my profile)

Although others would doubtless disagree, I'd say go for gumtree. For a start, the ads are free so you don't lose anything, unlike with ebay. You do get a lot of morons, but they're pretty easy to spot via email/phone, so you can usually ensure only genuine people see your car. I recently sold a 1997 corsa for a friend on gumtree, and was somewhat apprehensive as I knew it would attract tts. Had a few people calling and asking my "last price", put the phone down on a few of them and after a few days got a call from a couple who turned up on time, paid cash and went.

We've had awful experiences selling our cars on ebay and AT, so gumtree would be my first port of call now. Owners club forums can be good as well.

Value somewhere around £5k, ads in auto trader range from £6k to £8k (needless to say these are asking prices)

Ad in the local shop window/ car window sounds a bit tweed, i want it gone in a week.

How about best offers by ..or is this simply an auction by an nother name ??

Hmm...had a quick scan through the wanted ads in PH classifieds, all seem to be looking for sports cars or late models

It's a BMW

Sold, money in the bank and little or no hassle

And the answer is...

Give the car to your younger brother, who precedes to
Sort out wheel/ tyre, give the car a deep clean/polish inside and out
Place add on eBay, deal with the emailers, callers, the buyer and the monies biggrin

for those curious it was a BMW touring, 525d, auto, FSH, 120k miles and made just over £5k

Being a fair older brother i sorted out my brother for his troubles...circa 5% sales price (net costs)
