Db of a standard DB9
Discussion
I have a DB9, took it to Castle Coombe to be tested, limit is 100db at Castle Coombe. With standard exhaust and fuse 22 OUT, I pasted the static test easy. I've since changed the exhaust, so I would need to be retested (I think i would fail now).
I pasted the STATIC test and did not take the drive-by test. When the car is under load the noise increases, so a drive-by test may be more difficult. But at the time I only had to pass the static test. I think the drive-by test is orientated towards neighbours who complain.
I know that if you pay for your trackday and then fail, you lose your money. Phone the Trackvenue and go there prior to the day and get your 9 tested. Your standard 9 should pass easy, if the limit is 105db, I think I might even pass myself.
Where is it, and what is the limit?

There are quite a few apps for the iPhone for checking sound level if you have one. Not as accurate as a sound level meter but near enough for track day.
The one I downloaded was crap to be honest. It said my bike was 117dB without the baffle at 7.5k rpm. Oulton Park checked it at 106 without the baffle (had to put the baffle in as it was a 102 limit). How do they check car noise limits? Does the engine layout and size affect revs it's checked at? How far behind the exhaust is it checked? Bikes are 0.5m at 45 degrees.
Just went to a Track day
to get my car tested for sound levels. I've put a snazzy exhaust on the car and I know that the car passed the 100Db limit before I put the exhaust on, so i wanted to see what it was now.
Tested at 1.0 metre at 45 degrees at 4500rpm as a static test, limit was 100Db.
Took the rpm up slowly and just failed the 100Db limit buy 102Db one side and 104Db the otherside, I was told that the sound level doubles every 3Db. I said that the drive-by test might be harder to pass, then we did the test again with me giving the car a good bit of, "go juice", again on the static test.
I hit 117.5Db ......opps
So when getting tested, make sure you rev very gently .....

i wouldnt follow that advice to be honest. at bedford they monitor the cars on the track and if you have got that far you will be pulled on your first lap and lose your fee and ruin your day. whats the point of that.
you should rev your car to a point typical for the track and know before. if it is too loud then it is too loud. get one that isnt.
last time there i saw EXACTLY this happen. the track marshalls arent stupid and they dont care who you are or what car you have, its their livelihood. you might get lucky at some places, you might not.

That's really no surprise.I can see that they will allow vaguely representative comparisons of one thing to another but in terms of absolute noise they are light years away from having any form of calibration, knowledge of microphone frequency reponse, noise weightings etc etc.
Can an iphone or android handset microphone actually cope with 100 dB? I'd be amazed if they did.
The only way to measure noise and it have any relevance is with a calibrated meter and know what the weighting criteria is. As suggested, pitch up before hand and get it tested.

Hello Vankypanky, i do apologise if I gave the impression that I was telling people to rev carefully on the static test. You're right, if the drive-by is cronic you should rev your car to a point typical for the track and know before. if it is too loud then it is too loud. get one that isnt.

, they will pull you over. This was what I was talking about to them, and hence by, "go juice", test and got the 117.5Db
, that was a better indiaction of the level of noise. When the car is under load, it sounds a lot louder than a simple static test.Sometime they do a 105Db track event, that might be an idea. Or just stick the exhaust back on for a track day.
I just have my exhaust for fun .......

I read my posting again, and it could be read that I advice to rev carefully. I would like to clarify that Vankypanky is right, they are not stupid, if the drive by test is bad, they will retest with a second static test and you may be able to wangle a pass on the static, but they have the choice to just say no, especially if you are taking the piss out of them. You will lose your money and will go home with no photos of your track day.
