Drove from Hull to Filey last night to collect my parents from their caravan (static!). Set off at about 19:45, and used the sat nav as I don't usually do this trip. It's about 40 miles (well ok then 38.4 if you believe the GPS)
The first 15 miles or so which once out of Hull are mostly village to village country roads alternating between 30MPH and 40MPH. Mostly 30MPH.
So, we now have a little 'carnival procession' of cars, and knowing that Blunderside police are a little revenue hungry, I keep my eyes firmly on the speedo to make sure I'm driving safely.
Some cars turn off and I'm now the person in front, tootling along quite bored trying to keep the car straight. Hav eyou noticed that when you drive very slowly along a road which should have a much higher speed limit that it's not easy to keep the car true unless you concentrate on it? It's like you can't get into the swing of it as you're in slow motion? perhaps it's just me.
So, we come to a roundabout (40MPH) and exit off into the darkness. No NSL sign, but no street lighting or houses either, just fields. What's the speed limit?. Well, it should be sixty, but don't fancy trying to explain that to a SCP, so follow the car who's now infront who's doing 32MPH. Nice estraight piece of road to overtake, but don't really want to as the SCP's love these types of road so, stay behind 32MPH. We now have another carnival procession. Sod this, must be 60, so overtake. he person I'm overtaking speeds up so I have to boot it to get past him/her. I'm now at 70MPH+ before I can pull back in. person behind not happy and droppes back. Lovely, can make some progress at last, then get stuck behind one of those cars that looks like it's about to die. Dim lights, dirty, doing anything between 30MPH and 45MPH in a sort of infuriating rhythm. Can't get past because of the road layout. Carnival prrocession again. Finally get past it (driven by 2 old folks with scarves on, duffle coats the lot - in a car?? WTF). 1 very dim yellow headlight, and the other not working.
Make progress again. THEN get stuck behind a high sided funiture van, who's doing a little slalom to himself, driving with his off side wheels on the white lines so I can't see or get past him. Keep checking the Sat Nav to see where a nice straight is with no side roads. finally get to one, can't see any headlights in front so pull out and boot it. The Sat Nav clearly doesn't indicate dips in the road, as a little scooter thing complete with very dim front headlight appears from out of one. Brake and pull back in. Plenty of time, but shook me up.
We are now up to 1 hour to complete this 38 mile journey. Last leg is spent behind someone doing a sedate 35 MPH in a NSL, and braking for things that are invisible to me.
Perhaps it's me, but I've never been as stressed driving.

Sure thing, it feels wrong to drive at a speed significantly lower than the 'natural' safe speed for the conditions because it is wrong, and it's also difficult to sustain. That's why we've got ever lower speed limits, safety camera partnerships, and worsening road safety.

I spend my whole time worrying about getting nicked when im on the bike. The conditions you describe were 90% of the reason I sold my MR2 - never got chance to stretch its legs, and I was sick of sitting behind traffic, so I sold it and bought a cheap runaround and a bike.
It was a good decision.

a lot of stuff about a very tiresome and frustrating journey mostly in East Yorkshire.
I do sympathise, honestly. You ought to try doing more of your motoring in North Yorkshire as far as possible. It's mostly still like the good old days around here.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Try a blatt on the road between Hawes and Ingleton, (via Ribblehead), not a speed camera in sight.....

Fair enough. I'm sure we could compile a long list of such areas without too much bother, and that's without needing to stray outside North Yorkshire.
Best wishes all,
Dave.
About a year ago changed driving style.
No longer charge anywhere, just waft.
Relatively relaxing, a lot safer (SCP).
Turn brain off and drive, just go for a blat occassionally.
There is far too much risk to my license driving at an appropriate speed nowadays.
However come the revolution I will be happy to supply the wall.

brian35, I think you just decribed an average journey in the UK in this day and age!
It is frustrating I know, especially to all of us who are keen drivers. Unfortunately there are more of them out there than us! They just bimble around, not thinking, not concentrating and not really making any 'effort' to drive.
Unfortunately, if you blast past or go for that dodgy overtake it will probably be you that we or the cameras pick up!
In those situations you really do have to do some self control. There are not many roads in the uk that dont have junctions/TL's/R'bouts etc. and often the cars you overtook come dawdling up behind you as you are held at the next obstacle.
There will be other times and another day when that road will be a bit clearer. Don't let it wind you up...thats when you drop your guard and your standards!
Safe driving all.
