How is the best way of doing this? Going to look at a cheap snotter tomorrow for drifting in. Has no tax though.
Obviously I'll need insurance documents to tax it, which I won't have.

So how do you chaps get round this? I don't want to make 2 trips really.

TIA.

Practically speaking, there are only two ways round it - wait until you get a cover note, or book it in for an MOT, which will enable you to drive it with no tax.

(Or possibly see if the current owner still has a cover note for it)

Most insurers, certainly all of my vehicles insurers, email your insurance documents.

Insure vehicle. Print documents. Drive to PO with new keeper slip.

Couldn't be easier.

Brilliant. So I just need somewhere local to him to print the documents off.

I'm 99.9% certain I'm going to have it, could I insure myself on it anyway before I leave and print the documents off myself? Or is that against the law?

Technically I suppose you shouldn't be insuring a car that isn't yours when declaring that it is, BUT i would suggest you are acting within the spirit of the law and doing all you can to stay law abiding, therefore to me it is the sensible option.

Oh, and the mods may move this to Speed Plid and the Law - if it does you'll just get a lot of incorrect advice from bitter and twisted odd bods and it'll turn into an argument! hehe

ETA - There are some very knowledgable posters there, but it's difficult to see the wood from the trees. thumbup

Similar situation a few years back when me and a few mates threw in and bought a motorhome for Glasto, Went to Manchester on a Sunday to collect it. NO tax on it and no opportunity to physically tax it at a post office as we had the insurance cert (in Wales) and the vendor had the V5 and no PO's open on a Sunday, as we new this in advance I called my local PoPo station to ask what the law actually is. I was told that in theory it would be illegal to drive it on the road with no valid tax disc on display, but taxing it online was "OK" as any Traffic cop who stops you will be lenient if you have insurance, MOT and print out of the DVLA page showing that the taxation process had been completed.
