Thought some of you guys would find this interesting. Its in car footage of some testing that I did for a flat shift gearbox that could be fitted to 996/997 Road and cup cars. Footage was the fist few laps. There was a little software glitch but the box was lovely. nicer to use than a Porsche motorsport unit, a lot cheaper and can be fiited to a 996 or 997 Road car.

It's a bit boring at the start, but it's worth the wait. Like the motorsport unit, it's flat upshift and heal toe downshift so best of both worlds. Forget PDK, if the 991 GT3 had this fitted it really is something special...

I also have the benefit of having raced a sequential box which frankly is my favourite so far. If I could get that It would be perfect for me. no flat shifts so heel and toeing is the norm.

You still need to heal and toe with both the Porsche motorsport and this unit. If you don't you will be off at the first corner..

i would say its ideal for a GT3 bought prediominantly for track use with some fast road action.

It really is a lovely unit. Don't know details of life and rebuilds though.

Does this system work by momentarily cutting the ignition Steve? If it does then it sounds similar to a system I used in my single seaters and felt that it gave the best of both worlds.

Yep. Didnt like to say in the header because I'm not trying to sell anything for anybody, just show you Guys something that you may find of interest. I found it considerably better than the Motorsport unit. They asked me to run it in GT Cup but my previous experiences of the GT Cup were not good and my Sponsors wanted me to Do Carrera cup so it never happened.

Looks good what sort of price is a 'box like that?

Also surely it's heel and toe named after the bits of your foot used.

Not sure, but I remember it being less than the cost of a full rebuild of the Porsche unit! Not sure about your heal and toe comment. In the film, I'm braking with my toe and throttling with my heal but some drivers do it differently. The effect is the same

Yes it should be 'heel' rather than 'heal'. But I think it refers to the nautical verb heel which means to "lean/tilt/tip over" which is a more accurate description of what you actually do with your foot when heel & toeing.

Maybe, but it is closer to what you actually do. Wiki's take on it is this:-

"The name, stemming from earlier automotive designs where the accelerator pedal was on the left and could be actuated with the heel while the brake pedal was actuated with the toe, is misleading regarding how the technique is carried out in modern cars, i.e., operating the brake with the left edge of the foot, while rocking it down and to the right to operate the throttle."

That was my point and hence dubious link to heel in the nautical context of rocking from side to side. In most modern cars your heel will be always on the floor. But anyway, it definitely isn't heal!

Nice smooth tick over, interesting concept - what are the advantages over pdk though, has that not superseded its use?

If you are an accomplished driver you have far more control with this box than a PDK. In addition, the driving experience is similar to a manual box. Light and day in terms of involvement.
