Why aren't all 'petrol' cars LPG from the factory?

LPG has missed its day. That's it. Forever resigned to a few people who can be bothered. Shame really.
Worried it may well be this. If I was in the market for a barge, it'd be a strong consideration.
Know a lad who's "snotter" is a Fiat Scicento (Sp) with a mighty 998cc engine and runs on LPG. 50mpg and paying 1/2 price for fuel, all in a car that owes him less than £500 for a years T&T on it and £140 to insure....... He dumps it at work in all manner of places and just doesn't care.
He's 6ft4 and what I'd call "chunky" so he does look comical behind the wheel
The more people who have it the higher the price and the more taxed it is, simple as that. Look at Diesel, at one point it was considerably cheaper than Petrol and as soon as petrol prices went up and diesels got better (let's face it they were tanks before the likes of forced induction, common rail and dci etc..) the government whacked the price up! Typical BS!
Isn't it more about demand? A few manufacturers tried it and didn't exactly get their hands bitten off, possibly because the network of stations carrying it wasn't there. Joe public in the uk is generally an idiot and didn't want to try something new.
Unlike in Aus where it's very popular and a standard fit option on many models.

If the standard family car in the UK was a four litre V6, people would be looking every which way to bring the fuel bill down!I think it's more about the costs associated with developing and manufacturing a car to include another lage fuel tank, and associated gubbins, for what is a very small market.

Demand is created rather than organic these days. Noone cared about 'green' cars until they were rammed down their throats. As someone else has pointed out, most petrol stations have LPG.otolith said:
LPG is only cheap because it gets a big tax break which it arguably doesn't deserve.
Think this is probably the answer I was looking for, thanks!kooky guy said:
This is probably true! After all, diesel was dirt cheap before it became all trendy and people forgot just how awful diesel engines are...
Cost is associated with toxic s
t diesels spew out isn't it?Certainly the research publications were about the same time in the 90's...

hence the rush to get road pricing in, they cant tax electricity so need to replace fuel duty once reasonable numbers move over to electrickery cars veevee said:

I'm not sure that's true... there are, for instance, 14 garages in the whole of Berkshire according to http://www.getlpg.org.uk/ETA Actually, that's b
ks, but it's what they say
Data comes from http://www.boostlpg.co.uk/ and according to their map there are several more. But still...Edited by bigandclever on Thursday 22 November 15:29

[geek]They never made a 998cc Seicento. 899cc or 1108cc. [/geek] If I was in the market for a barge, it'd be a strong consideration.
