1950 to 2012 in 5 F1 driver steps

Monaco - 1950 - 2nd ever F1 World Championship Race. Harry Schell on grid.
Monaco - 1958 - H.Schell still driving - Graham Hill makes debut
Austria - 1971 - G.Hill still driving - Niki Lauda makes debut.
Monaco - 1984 - N.Lauda still driving - Ayrton Senna finished 2nd in the Toleman.
(lets not mention Niki's short sabatical)
Monaco - 1993 - A.Senna wins his 6th Monaco GP after Michael Schumacher retires.
Brazil - 2012 - M.Schumacher retires from GP racing.

Who of the current crop will still be in F1 come 2020??

You'd hope that Vettel and Hamilton are still there. Perez unless he blows it in the next few years. Hopefully Hulk and diResta would be there too.

Although Schumacher retired in the middle, you could substitute him with Rubens and get to the end of 2011 legitimately.

it was more due to my more patchy knowledge of the earlier races & racers, and the disruptive war years. My all time favorite driver of any era is Tazio Nuvolari.

It is a bit of a bugbear with me that so many sets of race statistics and race surveys seem to start with the magic year of 1950. It's like the previous 44 years of Grand Prix racing (and 4 previous years of F1) are totally irrelevant.

Because of this, so many really great drivers and cars are completely omittted from the stats.

And there is also a tendancy to completely omit all the non-Championship F1 and Grand Prix races that were part of the F1 season from 1950 to about 1970.

I would go

Schumacher 1991 - 2012
Ricardo Patrese 1977 - 1993
Jacky Ickx 1966 - 1979
Jack Brabham 1955 - 1970
Fangio 1950 - 1959 (though he did miss 1952, this is acceptable because he is JM Fangio)

Still have Schumacher's 3 year gap, but that's acceptable.
