I have been looking for something to replace my 120d, i have been looking at e46 m3's which where top of my list but ive just realized these s4's seem like a hell of a lot of car for the cash, a fair bit cheaper than an m3 and compared to the m3 im getting freakishly low insurance quotes to boost.

I imagine they are two competently different beats to drive with the audi being more laid back and comfy. What are the running costs like on the s4's compared to an e46 m3?

Great cars. I've had two, a standard one and another tuned to 330hp.

Weak spots, turbo failures, camsand gearboxes off the top of my head. Both expensive to rectify. Major services are expensive. Mine had an invoice from and Indy for £3,000 to include cambelt and a new cam and some other bits.

Brilliant cars if you buy a good one though. MRC Tuning are the people to speak to, they now them inside out, even built one for VMAX which did 200mph! Make sure you get a health check done before you buy one to save big bills!

I'd be concerned about turbo(s) as well. Given the age of the car I'd stick on the safe side and go for something naturally aspirated and trusty. C32 AMG Mercedes? Alpina B3?

If you are technically able then these are fairly cheap to maintain tune and will give you a LOT of car for the money. If you rely on others to do the work you could end up spending buckets.

Not overly keen on the looks of the c32 AMG think i would take the e46 m3 over that. Same with the alpine b3.

Gut instinct says m3 ahhh what to do.

It will break
It will ruin your finances

Buy an M3.

Fast Audi's are scary money to fix especially B5's.

I really like the look of these, but the horror stories are off putting.

How common are these issues?

Bugger, yes, of course it is. CLK 55 then. Big heavy no frills V8 lump. Gets the job done properly!

I once considered one of these but a friend who used to work for Ricardo (of Veyron gearbox building fame) offered the opinion that it would be fast but dull.

Was he right?

Would an early 4.2 S4 (B5.5?) Be in range? Think they are similar money to the e46 and no hassle with forced induction.

I ran one for 2 years and 30+000 miles. The only issue other than usual service items was a new coil pack. Similar mpg to the m3 also.

wavey I've still got one, and have been surrounded by simular sorts of stuff for ages, aswell as friends with mspec stuff.

Standard the M3 is the much more fun car and is faster, but they both have their own horror stories. On the driving aspect, unless going sideways is your main source of fun I would lean towards the S4 as they are much better all round toys when fettled with.

Spend the extra few quid and get one that has already had an upgraded pair of turbos as they are the weakest spot and require the engine to come out, if they have been done its probably also had a clutch and belt change and will keep on pounding along to 200k miles, eating M3s and lots of other things without a sweat biggrin

Oh, mine is averaging around 20mpg, most spare parts can be picked up out of gsf, ebay and the like for little money, much the same for the M3.

A friend has one with all sorts of bits and bobs.. circa 450hp I believe.

Problem is its not a cheap car to look after, for example rear brake discs are somewhere north of £300 trade price. Lots of work is engine out job. I can't remember if it was these or the RS4 of the same age, but when they got released there was an issue with the turbos and there was a recall to replace them - engine out.. to do so you basically remove the front of the car and yank it out the front.

When the camchains/tensioners need replacing on an V8 B6 you'll know all about hassle.
