How does a clutch / push rod work??
Discussion
Hello
I have just had the gearbox refurbished on my mk3 Golf. I removed the engine and the box to make things easier. Whilst the box was being refurbished I did all the engine belts and clutch etc.
So I put the gearbox back onto the engine last night. The first thing I noticed was a rod sliding in/out from the centre shaft on the box. I assume this is the clutch push rod?
It seemed to slide in/out very easily.
I turned the engine on it side very carefully to make it easier for me to drop the box down over the clutch. I can assume then that once in position gravity would make this push rod drop down and rest against the clutch?
How does it all work though in simple terms?
When I re-attach the clutch cable, does this pull on what is called the clutch fork that is on the side of the box? This in turn pushes the push rod into the centre of the clutch plate pulling it away from the engine hence disengaging drive??
Or do I have it all wrong....
Thank you!

Yeah the clutch is reversed on these type of gearbox if I remember right. I.e. the pressure plate is bolted to the crank instead of the flywheel.
The pushrod slides through the middle of input shaft and presses onto a nub on the pressure plate. There's a little bronze bush and seal at the end of the input shaft. It's a good idea to change these every time the box comes off because the shaft wears the bush, which then makes the rod run off centre, which then tears the seal, which then leaks oil onto the clutch plates
Yeah the actuator arm and release bearing are under the green cap at outboard end of the box if I recall.
