Apologies if it is already being discussed elsewhere...

Saw this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/20451602

Then I read to the bottom of the article and saw this:

Brake Loony said:
Julie Townsend from the road safety group Brake said: "We think it's very worrying that 16-year-olds will be able to drive these with just a moped licence as clearly the two vehicles are very different things.

"We're also concerned by anything that might encourage teenagers to be more inclined to drive when they're young."
FFS! Is there no end to their megalomaniacal stupidity?

To be fair mate. It's a retarded idea for a vehicle anyway.

Let the baby have it's bottle with this one. Can you imagine the chaos of cars limited to 28 mph clogging busy roads?

Doesn't the G-Whizz fall into this category? Don't see Brake up in arms about those.

They have a point about the validity of licencing, but they also very clearly state an anti-driving agenda.

Oh yes, how terrible to have the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want!

Remy And Prof appear to have missed my point. Perhaps I wasn't sufficiently clear.

It may well be a retarded idea for a vehicle and, no, I would not want to see them clogging up the roads, but read the quote again and look at the final sentence. THAT is what I am so enraged about.

For once I am with Brake on this one. 16 year olds should not be on the roads.

So this is actually a thinly disguised Rant About Brake thread?

They are right, but for the wrong reasons.

They do seem to have a misguided view that anyone interested enough to want to learn to drive is a liability to everyone else, where did they get that idea from?

Plenty of 16yr olds have mopeds already, would you ban them from the roads? Where do you draw the line, ban them from push bikes as well?

I don't think it's disguised at all, is it?!

Prices were quoted as £10k, so there's little danger of that. And scooters are no easier to pass (safely) so IMO it's irrelevant.

Hang on though, a 16 year old can ride a 50CC scooter, frankly i would rather they were in a Quadracycle where i can see them if they are going to be on the road anyway.

What i haven't seen is any kind of indication of insurance cost for a 16 year old on a suitable "car", If it is going to be sky high I would suspect that only Tarquin will be getting one with Mummy and Daddy's money, and he will spend most of his time on the pile in Berkshire anyway.

If young people are struggling to insure a few hundred pounds on 10 year old supermini, they are not going to be going out and spending a load of cash on a twinzy/g-wizz or whatever plus the sky high insurance, they will wait until they can get a proper car!

OK if some fortunate 16 year old who lives "in town" has a generous parents who are willing to insure them on the Twinzy they have for the inner city commute, fair enough, but i really cant see the roads being taken over by 28MPH lawnmowers any time soon.

I see the OP's point though about the wording of the Quote from the Brake Numpty.

For a parent who wants to give their child some freedom at 16 these things look safer than a bike, and people already get cars given to them at 17.

Mmmm. I quite like this quote, because it can be used against them.

Most of those cars are used though, no? (I could be wrong...) So I suspect the decision for most parents would be: £10k now, on something that'll last a year or £much less in a year that'll last for years until it's crashed.

Only takes one to clog up a road and there's plenty parents who buy kids their first car.

Scooters are about half the width, and can keep up with traffic up to about 50mph so you may not even have to pass in the first place.

I don't mind a discussion but to say my point is irrelevant with such a flimsy defence is a bit much...

A scooter for a 16 y-o will only do 30mph. When was the last time you even saw one out of town? And see my point about new vs used cars.

Sorry to seem dismissive but I can only see this being a complete sales flop.

Width shouldn't make any difference to your overtaking technique.

I wonder if you can get them remapped / tuned lol. 35hp may be on the horizon for the street racing stupidly rich 16 year olds
