I'm a little bored of my M3, so what sports car can I get for 7k ish.

I was thinking of a Boxster S, but the only issue is that with 2 seats, it would get less use, whereas if it had 4 seats I could use it all the time now that I don't drive a lot for work I can get rid of the shed too. (or more likely just park it up and leave it for a rainy day.)

So any thoughts? I can't think of anything at all. Must be reasonable to maintain too and reliable.

You'll get mixed stories about their reliability, but I think the closest to the criteria if you need a proper four-seater is the RX8.

Problem is you have about the best 4 seater sports car there is.
Difficult to think of anything that will be as good or better.
You can pick up a Berra with the v6 within your budget. Lovely looking car and a great engine but I don't think it will be as much fun as the M3.

You've set yourself (and the PH massive) a tough challenge, to say the least: The biggest problem is that you already own the best car to fit that bill, going by popular opinion anyway.

^^ RX8 could be a good shout indeed though.

ETA: Granny ^^ beat me to it boxedin

Mainly because I'm considering one myself smile

2 seater only so that will be out according to the OP.

Integra Type-R is a good shout, I nearly got one a couple of years ago, it was lovely! I think the Monaro is also a good shout but I still like my idea of a classic Impreza. P1 or Type-R maybe?

I take it a 2+2 would suffice?

I guess common sense would say what bores you about your M3 and what would you like your new motor to be able to do?

As a 'proper' 4 seater sports car the RX-8 is probably your only choice, but less pace and less grunt than the M3 and you might not find it quite thrilling enough despite it's manic revs and balanced handling.

In the 2+2 stakes you've got things like a Porsche 944, 968, 928, Lotus Excel, Lotus Eclat and a few Jap offerings RX-7's, Supra's, 300ZX, 3000GTO, 200SX, GT-R's. Albeit some are more GT than out right sports car.

If "sporting" rather than sports car is ok then Honda DC2, Impreza's, Evo's could all be viable options.

Jag XK8 or tidy XJ-S could be a nice luxury GT option.

And of course there's a few Yanks I'd always recommend because they actually achieve the exact thing you are asking for. Mustangs, Camaros and Trans Ams.

This is a fast fun car with good residuals (I paid £6.5k for mine 6 years ago!!)

If you really wanted to spend your full budget a couple of choice mods could give you 400+hp and 180mph ability. A a car that's still cheap to run and maintain and will probably lose very little value over the next 2-3 years.

I've had a DC2 type r, best car I've ever had! Hard to find a rust free example now and they all need bushes doing/suspension refresh at this age. The newer DC5, might be a bit of a let down compared to the dc2.

Monaro - interesting, will look into it.

What about upgrading from my e36 to e46, much difference?

Also been looking at e39 M5s but the running costs seem to be a lot higher than a 3.

It is incredible how many people thing these things have 4 seats.

(I'm not saying you do, perhaps you misread the OPs requirements.)

This does throw up the debate of can you have a 4 seater-sports car?

I would have thought the definition of 'sports car' is a maximum two seats and light-weight?

Nope I thought they were 4 seaters, it looks like a soft GT car, so 4 seats are normal aren't they?.

Nope 2.

Originally designed as a 2+2 but it was bendy as fk, so Nissan had to remove the rear seats and install lots of bracing (have a look at one next time you're close). Also goes some way to explain the weight. At least that's the story anyway.

Exactly, still leaning towards a Boxster as everything else is a compromise. With an RX8 is it true that they are less reliable when used for short journies? As this would be a problem!

I like the idea of a 944 turbo too!

If you go down the sportscar route (i.e. 2 seats, light) I don't know if I'd buy a cheap Boxster unless I was willing gamble with some big bills. It is the obvious choice though.

I took an S2000 out the other day that was interesting. Cool engine, handled weird, very very mental.

There's a Z4 as well. I'm picking up one of those tomorrow... Muhahaha.
