I was on a job recently and got talking to one of the blokes,I mentioned that both me and my son's main interest in life was messing about with cars, this bloke pipes up........
'Oh,perhaps you could help me out then.We need to get rid of this car we have got sat on the drive,we have finally finished paying for it now so we want it moving because we are sick of seeing it do you reckon we could get a grand for it?'
I casually asked what it was and he replied 'It is a Passat TDi,one of the newer shape ones'.(Me trying to be cool and not really interested) I asked why he was getting rid and he said (rolleyes, some people, god help us).
'The Passat went all funny on the wife and she wont use it now,we had it in at the main dealers and they said it would cost £1500 to put right,We could not afford to have it fixed so we left it there, after about 18 months they told us it needed moving or else they would scrap it.We had it recovered and it has been on the drive for about a year,we finally paid off the finance so we want it gone.'( He said it had cost them £9000 by the time they had paid for it.)
Obviously I was going to snatch his hand off as the problem, from what I could gather, was something to do with the heater/air con/blower.(Common problem with Passats)? My son works at a VW/Audi/Skoda/SEAT specialist,he is not a mechanic,he runs the parts dept' so gets stuff at cost price plus all he help in the world from the mechanics.
Well as it turned out I got on quite well with this bloke, and as the days went on I realised I just could not bring myself to take advantage of him by buying this car so cheaply so instead, with some freindly advice he finally found someone to fix the car for £250!,last thing I heard was that he had it on Autotrader for a sensible price but I had gone on another job so never found out what he got for it.
I felt happy with myself for helping.

Don't think it would have been stitching him up if you'd bought it though, it was him that priced it not you and it's not as if you'd baited him down was it?

Think I'd have been tempted to say it won't cost much to fix and my son can do it, so how about I buy it for say £2k mate? Then you'd both have been quids in.

As it is he's probably telling someone else, "I offered the car to this bloke I worked with for a grand but he got it fixed for me for two hundred and I made an extra £3k when I sold it and I stitched him up 'cos I didn't even buy him a drink"

Well done.
The world would be a much better place with more actions like that.

I dont think so,without sounding patronising because he was a nice enough bloke,I would have thought it obvious that he was not the brightest candle in the box.

Did he get you a beer for being so kind and generous? (out of the extra 3k you gave him?)

This attitude saddens me.

Well done OP. However, it also saddens me that I even think "well done" rather than "you just did what we all should do as standard".
