Well - after flirting with a number of options, I ended up getting into a 991 S which I picked up today.
It is Agate Grey, two tone grey interior, sports exhaust, PASM -20mm and lots of other bits and pieces.
The car looks stunning on body coloured Carrera Classic wheels - lovely stance, nice splitter on the front to give it a more edgy look.
The ride is stunning, even on the lowered car. I prefer it to the steel sprung car I test drove. I have not wound it up yet, still running it in, but given the performance figures I expect it to be at least as fast as the RS on the road, if not quite as quick on the track. For a mere mortal like me, it will probably be quicker with the PDK in Sport plus mode.
It has really beaten my expectations - awesome. Will get some pics up when I can!

Earlier this year I enjoyed a private trackday down at the Ring. I was in a 7.2GTS4 (same output as the 991S), and a friend who is no stranger to TDs was in a his 7.2RS. The 7.2RS showed its +42hp power advantage on the long straights, but over the lap, I was quicker than him and could edge out a 10-15 second advantage. In a 991S, I would expect very similar results. When pushing any of the non-turbo 911s hard, driver abilities play a far more significant role than the actual car.

Depends on the drivers.
A GTS4 and 991S both pack 408hp with PDK and similar tech. Over the 20.8km, a 991S is only 4 seconds off a 7.2RS. The driver makes a bigger difference than the spec of a 911 when they are driven at 9-10/10ths by average drivers.

I think the 991S will be quite a bit quicker than a 4GTS (which I have had over the past three weeks). The 991 is so much more composed, also it is lighter, especially than the 4.
As I am a mere mortal I actually think that a PDK 991S in Sport+ mode will be a lot faster around a track than the RS in my hands. I will simply be in the powerband more of the time.
And for the 99.8% of the time I am not on track it will simply be a lovely car!

The recent 7.2 and 991 have shown me how wonderfully brilliant the 'standard' 911s are. They are seriously performant cars that are a quantum leap ahead of the 997.1 and 996 which were effectively very similar. Whilst the 991 is more synthetic than the 7.2 before it, they both represent a very sweet spot in Porsche engineering that will not be revolutionarily bettered for a long time. IMHO.
996+997.1 ==> 997.2 + 991.1 ==> ???
Car does not have PDCC - I got the car from stock (very attractive deal) and whilst I wanted PASM -20 I did not want PDCC.
The ride is amazing, exceptional, compared to the 4GTS I have been using for the last few weeks. The car is supple and composed and yet never a sense of loss of chassis control.
It does not have that GT3 DNA of making you feel as it you are transcribing the very road texture - it is a different compromise. It is the best riding car down our farm lane in cars ranging from a 1 series to a 5 series, a Subaru with EXE-TC suspension to the 993, 996 and 997 I have had.

It's a good GT car, and very quick and accomplished. But....it's huge, lighter but still a mini Panemera. Horses for courses, as a cosseting GT car then good decision.
You are right - it is really huge!!!In fact it is so huge is 3cm longer than the 997RS, or 5cm longer than the GTS.
So huge it is 4cm NARROWER than the GTS or RS.
You are right - it is MASSIVE
