I want to upgrade the stop/tail & rear indicator bulbs to Led.E/bay is a minefield to find the right ones. Do I need all white bulbs ? or do I need red for stop/tail,& yellow for indicators ? Bearing in mind the lights have a slightly tinted perspex outer cover , I want them to be bright.1996 Chim 400. Has anyone already done this & can point me in the right direction please.

sounds a good idea.. do they pass MOT? i think you have to buy one and see what it looks like
i looked at LED rear numberplate bulbs but it says they are not legal on the road so i asked the sales guy why do you sell them then? cant remember his answer
i know they look better so has anyone fitted them along with the rear LED bulbs?

If its going behind a red reflector there is something odd about the reflector washing out white so it need to to be in tune with the reflector colour to work at its best.
I have white LED in the tail lights but they are much dimmer than the incandescent versions so plan to change them to red after reading about this.

I have tried a few of these to replace the flasher/fog/reverse and so far I have not found they are quite up to it.
The ones with a group of standard led bulbs (as in the picture) just about match a 5W lamp
The SMD type (lots of little squares) are about half way between 5W and 21W
The single Cree element (blue or red aluminium case with a lens) are much brighter than 21w standard but they project a spot and in my lamps (the landrover type) this only lights the centre half of the main lens which makes them less effective.

SMD/SMT LEDs are the best of the bunch for spread and brightness.. Those multi "dome" LEDs aren't as bright as the SMDs. The alloy bodied ones tend to be "projectors" so lovely and bright, but only in one focused spot..
Towed SMDs are pretty good (just don't but a tower that is too tall). Use coloured LEDs appropriate to function, so Amber for indicators, Red for stop/tail and clear for reversing and you should be fine...

For my number plate (the shine through ones)I took the bulb carriers out as they were lighting up the inside of my boot rather then shining out through the plate, and mounted them on the rear panel behind the plate and covered the rest of the area with silver foil tape ,so now they are as good as LED,s. As far as the MOT for the rear lights ,I will keep the original bulbs and re-fit just before Mot just in case. They only take a minute . Cheers for replies. i looked at LED rear numberplate bulbs but it says they are not legal on the road so i asked the sales guy why do you sell them then? cant remember his answer

As far as I know LED number plate bulbs are not illegal - they are standard fit on new BMW's - have been for at least 5 years.
i know they look better so has anyone fitted them along with the rear LED bulbs?I've fitted led festoon bulbs in the number plate lamps on the Griff.
They are ok but quite directional so have to be aligned correctly to shine on the number plate.
They're still better on my car though be ause the back of the bulbs is open to the boot and I've had things damaged in the boot by e hot bulbs, so they're staying.
I am toying with changing them to a strip of led lights, because I found a festoon fitting with an led block attached so I can get a light in the boot. I plan to drive this from one number plate bulb and run the led strip(s) from the other.

Well I got some Led,s that work ( well Harrytsg let me try his ones). The problem now is that (a)they are not significantly brighter than standard bulbs, either on side or brake & on mine (b)when I press the brake pedal the front sidelights come on as well.On Harrytsg,s Chim using the same bulbs, his dash lights up when he brakes. There is obviuosly some quirky goings on on Tiv electrics & as I give up easily (specially electrics)I think I,ll stick to the originals.
