Got a call from a rival company offering a job and rival promotion within one year.
Basically. In my current job I've been promised promotion and training for the last 3 years but it hasn't yet materialised. Mainly because the existing manager is hanging on by a thread (semi retired, 3 day week) and for this reason i'm getting a bit impatient. The new job offered has a lower base for a much higher earning potential but it's very high pressure and may not be worth the extra £6k a year.
Would it be a good idea to request a meeting with my boss about "my future in the company"? I don't want it to sound like I'm playing one company off against the other (even though I probably am!) but there are some good perks with my current job that I will lose (shorter hours, longer holiday etc.). If I can change the biggest niggles in my current job I'd be happy but don't want to put their nose of out joint. Anyone else had this before and what response did they get from there employer?

Be honest, you haven't done anything wrong.
Speak to your boss, tell him you have been approached, and it has slightly turned your head. tell him why you prefer this company, but remind him of the previous discussions about promotion and or a pay rise.
Ask him if he still feels you can achieve that inside the current.firm, and see you you can agree real targets or goals or a timetable.
