More Electrical Problems!!!!

Took the Griff to a local Auto Electrician for 3 things - speedo not working, reverse lights constantly on, no fuel registering on gauge - as he has a pit. Found the reverse light switch on the gearbox, but he thought it to difficult to take off and needed a specialist! Couldn't find the fuel sender (it's not where the bible says it is!) or the 'toothed cog' that sends the pulses to the speedo (bible say they can be in one of three places!). He was descent enough not to charge me but I'm no further forward.

I recon I can resolve the reverse light switch, has anyone any experience of where the fuel level sender is, and where the speedo toothed cog is on an early pre-cat. Your help as always is greatly appreciated and I might part with a few beers when we eventually meet up

Fuel sender on mine(96) is top right hand corner of the tank under the material.
I know they can mis read, this is usually due to the contact on the float part not making contact properly with the wire on which it floats across.I took mine out bent it closer after cleaning and it seems to work ok now.

Pre-cat could be somewhere different but sureley on the tank somewhere??

My speed sensor is on top of the Diff which is different diff to yours so again if its not there i,m not much help.. sorry

BB thanks for getting back to me, I had seen top right location in bible - mine's not there. Stripped carpet off fuel tank and it's on the left hand side!! 6 inches above outlet pipe. So I should be able to resolve, going to check for resistance etc.

43.3 ohms (about half a tank ) but no 12v supply, better get in that footwell again!

Fuel sender on early cars is to be found at the left side of the tank about 2-3 inches from the boot floor.

The overflow trap is also on this side hidden behind the tank (no carbon cans on the early ones)for future reference just incase you might need to know.

also the speedo sensor is driven by the gearbox and you should check the connector which will be found on the left side of the gearbox tye-wraped to a vertical diagonal member of the chassis near the rear geebox mounts.

Thats interesting, I've got a connector tie wrapped to the nearside chassis rail with nothing connected to it - wires are black and a grey or white, I've always suspected that was the speedo. Will get it up on ramps tomorrow and stay under there until I find it.

My paranioia is telling me that the gearbox has been changed and there no speedo take off on the replaced one

Im taking some photos of mine in the morning from underneath and can send you some pics of what should be there.

There is a spare connector there too if memory serves but the pics will help you sort out whats what.

Got your e-mail, thanks for the pics, that should sort it out regards the location.

Can't do much at the moment as I took the alternator off and gave it to an autospark to fix the diode problem....will update during next week

Hi Northern Paul,

Don't forget that the original fitment imobiliser cut the supply to the fuel gauge as well as the fuel pump, maybe worth a look if this has been removed or interfered with.

I love this place, never would of thought of that in a month of Sundays - I took the imobilisor off a while ago.

New diodes in the alternator - £35.00 + VAT. Red led on dash now working as it should, hopefully I haven't goosed the battery. Up on the ramps next sort out the reverse light switch and the speedo.

Right, I know this is an old thread, but I've had my immob and alarm replaced and now the fuel guage doesn't work as above with Northern Paul, any ideas on how I get the proper supply back to it?

Any help much appreciated.
