Hey all,

I'm after some of your collective wisdom as to which set of wheels I should buy to replace my E39 530d manual, which is currently on its death bed. The E39 has been fantastic and I would love another, but manual ones with under 100k miles are rare to say the least.

Basically I want something with 4 doors and rear leg room as I have 2 teenagers to cart around. I want it to be fun to drive with around 200 BHP or more and be under 100k miles and preferably a manual although I would consider an auto. As its a second car for carting the kids back and forth to school and around when they are homel, it wont be a daily driver. My budget is up to around £3500 and I have been looking at the following:

BMW 530d / 530i / 540 ( but cant find any suitable manual ones)

Accord Typre R

Mondeo ST220

Passat V6 4 motion

Audi A6 2.8 or 2.7T

Audi A8 3.7 or 4.2

Jaguar XJ Sport

Your thoughts would be very much apreciated.

If you are looking at the ST220, also have a look at the Jag X-Type 3.0 Manual. It has permanent AWD and does 0-62 mph in 6.58 secs (faster than the ST).

Or get a TVR and take one Son at a time!

I hadnt thought about the XType, what sort of rear leg room do they have?

I don't care...you're talking in BMW code. No one knows what an E39 is.

Reasonable leg room - not huge. If you have a tall driver you couldn't get a tall person on the seat behind them.

I imagine that the interior is the same size as the Mondeo as they are the same chassis as far as I can remember.

Let me Google that for you.

Now you do, and have one less reason to troll a motoring forum.

Just the 400bhp biggrin

Wonder if he'd take my Clio in P/Ex!

New Supercharger fitted by Jag - might this mean anything for a new owner, other than "won't need a supercharger soon"...?

I remember following the long termer that evo magazine ran years ago. Reliability problems were rife even back then!

What's the timescale in terms of needing the new car?

I suppose it depends on how long you can wait/willing to wait on finding the car you want. If you're planning on keeping it long term, it's probably worthwhile locating the right car/best example.

You've shortlisted an A8. Have you considered am E38 7er if you want to stick to a BMW flavour (v diff to find a manual though)?
