Bloody hell old games are a lot harder than new ones.
Been playing tie fighter, and I would liken it to modern warfare or something, except each of the save points is at least 15 minutes apart, and you don't heal in between!
Privateer.. dug that out... not quite as difficult, but still, for probably the first 1/3 of the game you spend flying around in a craft where one missile hit removes your shield.
Wing commander + wing commander 2. asteroid fields seem a lot harder than i remember. but I think I need to lower the cpu speed for these a bit as its rather more hectic than I remember.
Might have to dig out a few more purchases from gog.com (which is awesome, except for the whole bank thinks its a fraudulent transaction thing)

Were you playing Tie Fighter with a joystick ? I tried a version of it a few years ago but never got past the joystick calibration screen..
Yes. It wasn't happy with my usb joystick with massive drift regardless of the calibration. I went into dosbox.conf and changed the setting from auto detect to 2axis et voila, it worked.I had a go at Tie Fighter a few months back and it seems harder now than it did back then! I might dig out Privateer 2 from the loft now that you have reminded me of it.
I can recommend a free program called DOSBox Game Launcher. It makes setting up, installing and playing much quicker and easier.
