Cyclists saddled with seafront speed trap
By Catriona Davies

A speed trap has been set up to enforce a 10mph seafront limit for cyclists.

The seven-mile promenade that runs through Bournemouth and Poole has proved so popular with commuters that local council officials are worried of the danger posed to pedestrians.

Yesterday morning they began a trial speed scheme with officials using a hand-held radar and within a short time more than 40 cyclists, many in suits and carrying briefcases on their bikes, had been stopped.

Chris Saunders, Bournemouth council's business development officer, said: "The biggest danger on the promenade is speeding cyclists and most are commuters. We want to encourage people to cycle to work, but just at a slower speed.

"It is very, very easy to break the 10mph limit because we walk at about 4mph, but we would just ask people to leave home a little earlier and cycle a bit slower."

By-laws allow the cyclists to be fined but officers were instead issuing warnings to those caught breaking the speed limit and giving them leaflets on safe cycling. The speed camera - borrowed from the highways department - is being used for a trial period but the exercise will be repeated if necessary.

The initiative found broad support among cyclists. Michael Evans, the chairman of Dorset Cyclists' Network, said: "We have had a lot of co-operation from the council in improving access to the promenade, because it used to be banned completely. It's a popular commuter route because it's safe and away from traffic."

Peter Merchant, a lecturer at Bournemouth University and a cyclist, said: "I agree with a 10mph limit but I wonder if a speed camera is a bit over the top. I fail to see how it's going to work because I've seen officials trying to stop cyclists and they just shoot past.

"But as cyclists we do have to realise we share the promenade with pedestrians and you have to be careful."

However, Paul Smith, of the campaign group Safe Speed, described the scheme as "absurd".

"This is a further extension of our obsession with numerical speed and schemes like this go a long way to shattering the public confidence in the authorities," he said. "It should just be about common sense."

With a limit of only 10MPH, they will soon ban us from running!

Must be worth a trip down to Bournemouth.
You could run faster than 10mph, would you get a ticket then.
Maybe you would then get an invite to the next Olympic squad.

I think what's next is a career change, buy a red flag and be the first to walk in front of traffic (if you can patent/franchise it - would be worth millions)

So, just how do you tell you're going less than 10mph on a bike? Speedo's aren't required, are they? I don't see how this one can win.

But you don't have to keep looking at a speedo to know how fast you are going.

Surely?!

What is next? They persecute motorists, then they start on cyclists, can they not get to the crux of the matter and teach pedestrians to walk with their eyes open.

I love the way people of all sorts are dehumanised and inserted in to a box of some sort.

I am therefore not a bloke called Swilly, but am simply a 'Driver'.

Unless i am on my bike when i change into a 'cyclist' and in between i crawl into a chrysalis and emerge as a 'pedestrian'.

The truth is 'driver', 'cyclists' or any other boxed way of describing people is simply the trigger to the particular mechanism the Government use to TAX us.

Id love to get "stopped" by one of these twats.
The words "Get the outa my way lentilist dipturd" just naturally roll off the tongue, and as theres no number plate on the bike, theyd have to "lay hands" on me to do something about it....then the fit would hit the shan.

Having difficulty walking with that device up yer bottom are ya? awwwwww off to mommy it is then..

As the cyclist touring club has been a major activist in lobbying against the 'dangerous speeding motorist' - I think it fantastic news.

NEWS FLASH!! The Government has just announced a "walking speed limit" of 2 mph. Mr Darling explained that this was to protect older walkers, and children, who are unable to walk at this speed and may be injured by inconsiderate speeders.

A special "Walking Police Patrol" will be set up in all major towns and cities throughout the country. Speeders will have their shoes/trainers confiscated and banned from using them again for up to 12 months depending upon the severity of the offence.

Speed camera's and a penalty points system will be used to ensure compliance. Repeat offenders will have 12" ankle chains fitted, to reduce their potential speed.

Mr Darling said: "We can tolerate this hustle and bustle no longer, it is now time for action".

Approximately 2000 protesters were held back by Police ranks as Mr Darling sped away in his sports saloon car with Police escort! .......
