it's getting a bit muddy out there and my current tyres really need replacing anyway.

what would people recommend as a good mtb tyre for muddy, stony, leafy, streamy terrain that i currently seem to be encountering? i was thinking dirty dan. any other thoughts? looking for 26x2.25 or greater (2.35 or perhaps even 2.5?) any experience of wider tyres being any better?

I think the Dans are good but pretty slow rolling on anything hard packed. Continental Barons with the Black Chili compound are pretty decent as an all-rounder and grip well in mud.....I just wish they did a 29er version.

Specialized Storm Control. Good all rounder and good in mud. Although for proper muddy conditions you need something thinner and very knobbly.

Are you talking downhill, or all mountain esque?

If Downhill then Dirty Dan's are great but will not last. I've binned a pair after two races before. Wetscreams are a good solid alternative amd will last a reasonable amount of time but at the expense of grip on rock/root compared to the DD in Vertstar. Being dual compound it's also more difficult to cut the DD's (I only ever really use wetscreams cut now).

Hutchinson's Dzo is something i've spent a lot of time on recently and been impressed with. It's more World Cup/Euro than UK though so if you ride somewhere flat in the south of the country you'll likely find the grip afforded to be good but not enough to offset the increased rolling resistance of the very aggressive nature.

I generally go for cut wetscreams on both my AM and DH bikes over the winter unless racing, in which case I'll use either the Conti Mudking, Schwalbe Dirty Dan Vertstar (it says it's a 2.35 but is bigger than a Maxxis 2.5) or the Hutchinson Dzo. A cheaper and equal performing tyre to the venerable wetscream is the Specialized Storm (it's made in the same factory, using a near identical casing, and a virtually identical Supertacky rubber as Maxxis)

If you're talking AM however, and unless your AM trails are basically true DH, then I'd be looking at something much, much lighter and less aggressive than a DH tyre. Continental Baron 2.35 AM's are pretty good as a high volume all rounder, as are the Schwalbe Hans Dampf.

For XC I use Panaracer Fire XC pro's. These are my favourite, give you a shed loads of confidence. They gives loads of traction and seem to push through the bogs with ease.

If you want mud pluggers, nothing beats a Maxxis Wetscream biggrin
