Apologies if this has come up before, but we quite often hear the term 'supercar' smile Now, I can understand the McClaren thingy and the Veyron being called supercars, but what is it that allows a car to fall into this category? My TVR does 0-60 in sub four seconds (proven) and has a top speed of 180 (not proven), but in no way would I consider it to be a 'supercar'. So what is it that allows a car to fall into this somewhat exclusive category?? Just to add, I imagine this changes year on year as what was a 'supercar' 15 years or so ago probably isn't today..... Just curious..

Don't forget that there's the other category for fast motors called 'Hypercars'.

Chronilogically, things have changed. I remember that cars capable of over 150mph would be classed as supercars. Some other people think that Porsche, Ferrari etc al are supercars based purely on their name.

Not sure what TVR you have, but I'd consider those capabilities to be within supercar territory.

Frequently discussed and no one agrees.

It has to combine looks, speed, exclusivity, desirability and arguably history.

Technically a Cerbera / Griffith 500 / Sagaris etc ought to be supercars - but most would say they are't - probably due to price / image.

Nice spanner in the works there with the GTR. Many jap classics could be considered supercars.

Also i would class the TVRs mentioned as supercars.

Oh yay, it must've been at least a month since we had a thread, or mention of this on here. No-one knows, just some cars are, some aren't.

Nice but too accessible/common, bit like a modern day Toyota Supra. We've got 3 of them at work!

This is more like it

Too cheap, no class.

Seen on Council estates rather than Country estates.

A Nissan GTR is no supercar.

Nothing to do with speed IMO, more to do with price, exclusivity, badge, number of cylinders, etc.

In most peoples hands im sure a Nissan GTR or 911 turbo are faster than a pagani zonda or koenisegg but there not supercars, not to me anyways.

A supercar needs at least 8 cylinders for me as well. smile

A supercar is whatever you want it to be. For me, not only does it need great performance and striking styling, but also needs to be difficult to drive, have a reputation as a bit of a handful, not be the obvious choice.

Just my opinions.

i'm betting you'd have had the countach on your wall and not the 959

supercars were ruined the day they made them useable every day. (but i'm old and outdated like my ideas smile)

The badge is a big thing, a Nissan GTR is very, very quick, but to some people its not a supercar. A BMW M5 With 550 BHP has around the same bhp as a Ferrari 458 and more than an F430, but the Ferrari will be seen more as a supercar.

Crap explanation, but you know what I mean.

Ok that makes the list, but only because it's massive, was very expensive, and had some of the biggest turbo lag ever. Think a lot of people agree with me as im sure i read they had loads of orders for it when it was meant to be a V12, then when it had a V6, they all ran off. lol.

...and it does nearly 220 mph!!! Turbo lag is not that bad if you drive it properly, everyone knew what they were buying when they put money down for deposits - recession caused speculators to flake, and it is a better car for having the V6 TT, lighter and faster (but admittedly does not sound as good). Don't think there will ever be a definitive answer to what a supercar is as everyone has their own ideas, but to me, it needs to be very fast for its time, limited in production and high enough in price to give exclusivity, all of which are highly subjective.
