I need two new tyres for my car. Up until now I've been used to buying tyres at around 165/75/14 so I really haven't put too much thought into it, but this car is a bit less of a shed so I want to do it right.

It's a bit of a barge so I don't need trackday tyres; something with good wet grip would be nice, and the quieter the better. I don't really want to pay more than £100 a corner. Any thoughts?

Rover 75, for my sins. biggrin

That would do the job I reckon. Anybody know what the deal is with getting tyre places to fit mail order tyres? Are they usually happy to do it?

I think you just need to ask! Always worth while to check with local independents as quite often they can supply tyres from stock at a comparable price. My local place always obliges and in return I'll buy every 2nd set or so from them.

Hmm. Looked at the tyres again today and whoever owned the car previously was not especially clued up about cars it would seem. The rears are 91H and the fronts are 97V, and since oddly enough the two "good" tyres are on opposing corners of the car I don't feel comfortable running the two on the same axle.

So four tyres it is then. frown

Best I can currently find is the Nexen N-Blue which seems to come quite highly rated with a B and a B on the EU thingamy and a top three finish in an auto express test.

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2012-Auto-Exp...

Which come out at £314 fitted for the four - does that seem like a decent deal?

I had Nexens on a Chrysler Voyager - wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. Dig a bit deeper and get the Rainsport2, they are a good balance of value and ability.

I've got Rainsport 2 tyres all round. I think they were about £320 for the set from Camskill when I got them about 18 months ago.

They are rather good in the wet. Can be a tad noisy - yet that is insignificant compared to the road noise from rough surfaces around here. They may wear more quickly than other makes if you hoon about a lot. Also, would get them again.

Unless they were the Nexen N-blue davepoth posted, that is totally irrelevant. People do seem to think that you can judge an entire tyre manufacturer by the one pair of one model of tyre they've tried.
I've had a browse and I don't have any direct experience with any of your alternatives. The Nexens have decent reviews, although I'm not sure I'd take the new EU ratings too seriously. Don't see why not, personally.

P.S. People really rate the Kumho KU31 which are available in your size, if I was in your shoes I'd be considering these along with Avon ZV5.

I'm tending towards the Nexens too; seems they aren't too bad for sitting in traffic at an average speed of 25mph for two hours...
