I've had mine for 7 years and would agree. I don't like the interior fussiness of the R171 and R172 - and the styling of the R172 is appallingly ugly.
The SLK32 AMG does 0-60 in 4.8s, averages about 27 mpg and is electronically-limited to 155 mph. Quick enough for me - and with the roof up it also has the largest boot volume of any SLK (348 litre). Fitted suitcases from Roadsterbag also maximise the luggage space with the roof down.

Had a 2005 200K manual for a year, nice car, but didn't quite feel "special" enough. Now have a 2009 280 Sport auto.
The 280 is a different car. Faster, obviously, but smoother, more sophisticated feeling, and utterly effortless.
I've never had an auto before but the 7G in the 280 (and 350) is superb and suits the car perfectly. The 200K has a 5 speed that's hopeless by comparison, hence going manual with that car.
The other thing with the 280 is it squeezes into the £200ish road tax bracket, the 350 is £400ish (can't find the exact figs).
Bear in mind that pre facelift (which was in 2008) engines are higher emission though, so some 280s will be in the high tax bracket.
My 280 auto is working out at about 3mpg worse than the 200K manual overall, but a lot worse in town.
Essential options (I think) are:
Leather
Heated seats
Airscarf
COMAND is very nice to have too, as are xenon's, and parking sensors (long bonnet disappears from sight).
"Sport" gives you 18 inch wheels, rear spoiler, black headlight surrounds, black headlining, red seat stitching and seatbelts, leather, sport suspension. Makes the car look a lot nicer.
Most other stuff is standard, alloys, cruise, elec windows, air con etc.
Pre facelift cars mostly had sport suspension which is really hard. My post facelift car has 18 inch wheels and sport suspension yet is softer than my pre facelift with 16 inch wheels.
Overall though, brilliant car, I love mine and will (I hope) have another when the time comes to change it.
