Things that make you think, 'Good job fella!'
Discussion
This may have been done before but I got to thinking that there're plenty of threads inviting us to vent our spleen regarding 'bad' motoring skills and having borne witness to a bit of 'good' driving I thought I'd open the door to give praise.
I was encouraged to do this from having witnessed someone on the A1 this morning driving a Lancia Thema, (I'll admit that approaching it I thought it was a Saab!), but whoever it was seemed to be very aware of their surroundings and other traffic, especially considering the very wet conditions.
They, (I say 'they' as it was dark and couldn't make out their gender.), were making good progress and kept good space between themselves and vehicles in front. When I changed lanes to overtake them I realised they were gaining on the vehicle in front of them so 'flashed' to indicate they were clear to pull out...
Not only did they have the decency to indicate briefly to the left to allow me to pass, they managed to gracefully maintain their distance without braking then pull out behind me once I'd 'pressed on'.
Nothing special, but I think if more people conducted themselves in this way the roads would be a much more pleasant and safer place to be.
Go on then, take the p155!!!

I started one a few months ago...didn't last too long although it had positive comments, I think people appreciate a good moan over praise at the moment. I blame the government

It always feels good to get a thank you gesture from a motorcyclist when you acknowledge them and give extra space.
Just makes them come across as better road users.
I always indicate left and maintain a constant speed if a motorcyclist indicates they are passing, they never fail to give a thank you wave. Good lads.Just makes them come across as better road users.
Yes, I often flash people when I know they are going to need to overtake so they can go, it's amazing how many don't notice, so I have to wait until I see them check the side mirror too.. THEN they go....
And every now and again someone does it for me - I always give a thanks!
I also will move over in my lane to let motocyclists filtering through - almost invariably get a thanks for that too.

It's the little things. For example when you are on a not so busy motorway and you are in the middle lane making progress, overtaking others. Then you see a car in lane 1 that is gaining on it's car/lorry in front and you anticipate they'll be wanting out before they even think it. You move over to lane 3 so they can get out. That little wave or thumbs up of appreciation from the receiving driver goes a long way.
Un-moaned!

You need to be careful about this on the A40 as you often get bikes passing on both sides at once, and not at sensible filter speeds either. And every now and again someone does it for me - I always give a thanks!

Oh sorry, not supposed to moan on this thread.

I do enjoy sharing space with 'good' drivers. Sadly...
<moan>
Good driving seems to go relatively un-noticed.

Some may slate this but I've frequently been in 'ad-hoc' convoys of four or five cars on motorways where it's quite obvious we all know the 'rules' and (ab)use them accordingly AND safely. It's a lovely thing to be part of.
Similarly on 'A' roads where you can tell 'drivers', by the positioning of their vehicles in any given situation to allow visibility, overtaking and advertise their intentions.
I'm far away from being the best but I do consider 'driving' to be somewhat of an art form.
I was in lane 3 one day on the M6, and every lane was busy and all flowing at about 40mph maximum. I saw a bike approaching from behind, filtering between lanes 2 and 3.
I was in the van, which has no rear windows, but I had clocked him in the passenger mirror. As he reached me, a gap opened in the middle lane and he hesitated as he wasn't sure if I knew he was there or not. I flicked my right indicator on for a couple of flashes and he nodded his head and came through. Gave me a big thumbs-up.
I agree, Little moments like that make tedious journeys like that a little more satisfying.

If I'm on a long motorway journey I'll often find a 'motorway friend' in front who seems to want to go at the same pace and will generally have the same driving style as me. Tacking yourself onto them is quite good fun and somewhat therapeutic, ha.

Sorry bud', I had no intention of stealing your thunder. I just hadn't seen it. I started one a few months ago...didn't last too long although it had positive comments, I think people appreciate a good moan over praise at the moment. I blame the government

It's also nice when you've stopped for fuel/refreshments and a few miles down the rod you catch up with them 'cos they've done the same thing at another 'station'.
While I have no problems with keeping focus I find that having a 'mate' makes it easier and mutually beneficial.
I once drove from Pompeii to Rome in convoy with a couple of other, (known), like minded individuals, and while it was a little frantic at times, we all instinctively knew what the other one was thinking.
OK, driving in Italy is fast anyway, but sharing the road with some people on the same wavelength is absolute bliss.

You find you swap places on a frequent basis too?
I do. I think it's a subconsconscious thing of sharing responsibility. Whether it be lead or 'wing man' everyone takes a turn.
