Help!

Can anyone explain the coding on Chim Vin numbers please.

I have had running battle with dvla , the vin on all documentation matches but is one digit different from plate on car.
The first numerical entry on vin on car is 5 but on docs it is a 4.. I.e 7th character in.
  • ****5p7******** = plate on car.
  • ****4p7********= docs. V5 past mot,s and service records.

if your vin plate reads 37A45p and your chim is a 450 chimaera then thats correct and dvla are wrong.

Can't help with the vin No but I recently bought a Vixen which had a similar problem. The chassis plate showed *****02 and the logbook*****01. The person I spoke to at the DLVA said they would generally accept that a single digit different is a typo and asked me to send a photo of the chassis plate and the log book. It took about a month but the log book was corrected. My MOT man says that he should enter the chassis number from the car onto his system which would have resulted in my car not being found.

Hmm,

I once had an old cavalier convertible which according to the paperwork was an astra!! Their DVLA showed absolutely no interest whatsoever much to my bewilderment (and that of the local police who kept stopping me due to this obviously showing up false against a license plate check). I even had to replace an engine twice in that thing, each time reminding the DVLA of the chassis number correct/model type incorrect error but they simply ignored it.

How easy was the communication you had?

Thanks for the comments so far. smile I have since my first post done a little digging around through past posts etc.
Before I go into bat with the DVLA can I check with fellow company I'm not barking up the wrong tree.

As I understand it The vin can be decoded as follws:

SDL= TVR id. charcters 4 to 7 equal vehicle type. so dcc4. p equals petrol next is an internal check digit. T = year of manufacture ( ie 1996) the next (11th charcter)= month: 01 (12&13th characters) not used for any real purpose. Then the last 4 = the sequential build number.

Does this sound right?
So SDLDCC4p7TJ ****** would = TVR Chimeara, Petrol built in Sept 1996.

Cheers chaps all help gratefully recieved.

I sent the dvla a letter explaining the situation and asking if they would correct the information that they hold. I also sent the log book which perhaps puts pressure on them to take some action. With hindsight I should have sent the letter by recorded post. As time went on I did start to worry that it might have been "lost in the post"

If you have a local DVLA office nearby it might be worth calling in to see if they can offer any advice. I've always found them extremely helpful. Telephoning DVLA is an exercise in futility!

what about engine numbers do they have any relevance to engine stats?

..4p.. is a 4 litre petrol & there should be no confusion if you have a 4litre
..5p.. would be a 5 litre, there are some conflicts where 4.3's had the 5 and when the the 450's were introduced.

However you should have an extra argument with DVLA as long as your registration states that it is a 4 litre car.
Thanks for posting this link Dave. It can be difficult finding old posts; I knew I'd seen it somewhere in the dim and distant past.
