Skoda octavia estates, or what family 4k estate
Discussion
Boring thread warning!
I'm looking at px'ing my vw sharan for a skoda octavia estate(1.9 TDi PD Laurin + Klement). 2005 55reg car. It'll be the family run around for the Mrs, 1 owner. 100k. How reliable are this model of octavia? Are the lower bhp vag group engines that much better on fuel?(claimed 55mpg ave).
The Sharan is getting a little leggy and we don't need the space any more. Looking at a 4k screen price as i've about £1500 to put to the trade in value of my sharan(2003 52 reg 1.9tdi, 141k). What other options should I be looking at?

Loved my Octy PD130 estate - great car. Don't expect 55mpg, though; mine would do that on a run, but overall average was about 45-48. 35mpg if driven with a lead foot.
Beware of the DMF - 100k+ is the start of the trouble time; they tend to fail more if the car has spent long periods at low revs. Don't labour the engine - keep it above 1500 where possible. Most other problems are either quite rare or not too expensive to fix, that's why taxi ranks are full of 'em!

I thought all Laurin + Klement variants had the PD130/150? Don't understand why the top-of-the-range model would have the lower-powered motor.
Edit: Just checked with honestjohn and it is indeed correct. More troublesome than the 130, I believe.

Mines a '53 plate with the 1.9 TD110 (I think). It's done 30,000 miles in 18 months of mostly dual carriageway work and comfortably does 55MPG on average. Drops below 50MPG if doing lots of short tip and shopping runs but will also show over 60 on the OBC if driving like a granny on a long drive.
I've only had one problem with it when it needed a jumpstart after sitting at a station for a couple of days an issue that has never reappeared. Nothing else seems to break. I keep it regularly serviced and lend it to my kids to fill up with their kids and dogs and junk and it just seems to take anything that I throw at it.
Boot is plenty big enough with back seats down and it can be quite amusing when chucked at a bendy road if you fancy your thrills in a "non-quite in control, rolly" manner.
As you can tell I rather rate it and the economy means I can afford to run the Jag at weekends.

Ha - exactly the same situation as I'm in. Well being after a decent estate for 4K!!
Skodas look quite good, I was surpruised to see a few 2005 Passats coming nito the price range to (I haven't seen any in the flesh yet though!) but there are a few 2.0 petrol and 1.9 TDi's without really high mileage about (upto 100K).

Can't comment on the engine, but I have a 51 plate 2.0 8v auto.
It has now done 140k and has been a good car for us.
I have replaced the starter motor, cat, plugs and leads and drumsticks + trackrod ends in 40k of ownership.
The plastic water pump has seen better days when it was changed with the timing belt. But not sure if your model has the same pump?
A couple of police officers I know really rate the police car versions.

Ah, so the one after the upped the power. Think it's more prone to injector issues and other such nonsense. I also believe, but stand to be corrected, they also have the dreaded DPF too/?
The 105 is the last iteration of the 1.9 before the 2.0 110 replaced it and later the 1.6.So it is very reliable, no DPF, but was available on some models as an option.
