C36 AMG without ASR

[C36 Nico]

Looking at a 1994 C36 AMG. Want one without the vile ASR.
The one Im looking at has no ASR button on the dashboard.
Options list doesnt show any ASR. Its a Japan car.

How can you tell it doesnt have it, the seller has no idea if it has it or not.

Hello Nico ,

The easiest way to tell ,if it's not listed as an option , is to check the speedometer . The asr display is the yellow/orange triangle , which may illuminate with the other warning lights when the car ignition is turned to position 2 .

Other than an enthusiastic start to get the warning light to flick on , the fact the options list doesn't show it means it's probably not fitted.

You are best to avoid asr though , CAR magazine reckoned the c36 fitted with asr was slower through the bends than a c280 without it .

Can't tell I'm afraid !
It looks nice and tidy , and heated seats nice to have .
It has a gear stick from a later merc . The original had c36 embossed across it , diagonally on a 94 car , and black and grey leather on a later model .

check underseal on Japan spec cars too , particularly where you live , as they don't put salt on the roads in Japan .

Alright thanks! I understood it the early cars came with the ASR as an option and a button if it had it. Later on it was integrated and as such didnt have the button anymore, or Am I wrong?

So the only way to tell for sure 100% is to look for the triangle as you said?
Ive found a Carlsson C36 with a 5-speed manual in italy.
Dunno is the 5-speed manual from the C280 is preferable.

I think the earlier cars had a 4 speed box and later 5 speed, possibly the ASR change coincided with the gearbox change? I had a 1997 which did have ASR.

No , I wouldn't rush after a manual conversion , on the basis that the manual transmission W124 e320 was slower and thirstier than the automatic .
For me , I've had my red c36 for years , and I maintain it I'm original factory condition .

Let me tell you it aint easy to find a no-ASR car... yours is a 94 yes?

Mine has this option, but doesn't have a switch to de activate it.

Orange light comes on when driven enthusiastically and it cuts the engine power.

I would like to see the C36 manual that you mention, any chance of a link?

My car is a 1996 built car with no asr fitted and no sunroof . It's my ideal spec , but bought by a fluke over 6 years ago .

you have to deliberately floor it mid bend to get the car to step out at the back .I use the car in the wet , but not between November and march when the winter would destroy the paint .

So you could get the 96 cars without ASR too, interesting.
You could afaik also get them WITH the ETS ( traction control) but without the ASR.
The ETS to my understanding is kind of a pseudo-LSD...

What tickles my curiosity a little is the discrepancy in performance across the magazines.
some have 0-125 mph times of nigh-on 30 seconds, which would make it a dog compared to even the E36 3.0 ( around 22-23).
Will it feel alot slower coming from - say a E36 3.0?

I ask because the dealer selling this 94 C36 has no idea whether this car has ASR or not.
Figured I called someone up about it. George banks in west london perhaps?
I turned the key and no triangle came up, and there is no ASR button present.

ETS is not the same as ASR: it is an earlier system. In particular, ETS is not active above 80kmh and, I think, does not cut engine power but only applies a brake to a spinning wheel.

This car is showing code 212 on the datacard (ETS) but it is not showing any of the components associated with ETS (like the wiring harness).

ASR is code 471, which does not show on this car.
