The 55bhp Honda Deauville is the butt of many motorcycling jokes..Too underpowered, no image etc.. However, Wiltshire and Swindon's Safety Camera Partnerships have recently purchased such a machine and kitted it out with speed camera, video equipment and other such items...

The bike:

cost the force (including the equipment) £30,000. The money came from previously paid speeding fines. In 36 hours, the rider and machine detected 903 drivers exceeding the speed limits; thus raising £55,000 in fines, nearly doubling the investment of the bike.

Get ready for more such machines...easy to park up...difficult to see...and no complaints about them blocking pavements, bus stops etc etc..

You have been warned....

So they are confirming that speed detection equipment is bought and purchased purely as an investment, to see significant returns on the captial spent?

Would it always be BIB using this or will they let civillian numpties loose on such a bike?

Hiya Mr2Mike..

The word investment was from me...sorry...

At the moment on Bib can ride the bike, but I think that might change in the future or for different forces. Some civilians might make useful and pleasant alternatives anyway;

Its going to come down to how the thing is deployed. Easily hidden to catch all going 1 mph over the limits its going back to the arguement of the police alienating the public. Used in the correct area with the proper discretion then not to many problems.

My question is high profile policing, lots of warning, lots of signs. People slow down but no revenue created. Any one caught, re education NOT fines and points.
Or
Hid em all, warn the motorist if they speed they are done and lots of cash and points with all the consequences of that.
I wish the scameraships and to some extent police would decide on what policy or what % of each policy to use.

Well look on the bright side folks.

In only 36 hours, the police have managed to pi$$ off another 903 drivers, or about 600 per 24 hours. Thats 18,000 per month or 216,000 per year 'legal muggings'.

Marvellous.

They only need another 4 bikes and they can do 1,000,000 per year.

Very smug but it does little for your credibility as a leader on road safety
