LIEGE-BRESCIA-LIEGE Rally who is going
Discussion

Answer to the picture story a few weeks ago.
I Just wondered if there are any more Classic TVR owners going next year.
Really looking forward to the trip and having 11 days with my Belgian Co Driver/Navigator Frank (Bluezeland).
Irish Flag on one side and Belgian on the other.
I know that those in the TVR Club will be aware of the Rally but there are lots of others that are not in the Club that may not be aware and it is open to ALL TVRS Members or not.
Would be great to see a good spread of cars from all years just to make the Back up RAC Teams job all the harder as to what spares to have on board.

We're looking forward very much to running Liège-Brescia-Liège for TVRs in July - hope we can persuade you and your friends to reconsider, Steve!
On costs, the event is not just under £6000 - the full entry fee for two people is £3795 (shortly to rise to £3999) so I don't know where you got that figure from! For that, you get a professionally organised historic rally over 10 days, including 11 nights' accommodation in top hotels (almost all 4-star or 5-star, ALL your meals, all the maps you need, rally plates, route books, entry to museums and other places of interest along the way, etc etc.
Of course, it's possible to spend 12 days on the continent for a lot less than that, especially if you're staying in one place for several nights - but not if you're taking part in a competitive historic rally, staying in different hotels every night, with professional back-up from a fully-equipped RAC Rescue van and including 4-5 special tests on private circuits along the way. The investment in booking all of that is substantial and we'll need a few more entries before we break even - but that's the professional risk we take as event organisers: the rally will go ahead and this is the one and only time it will be for TVRs, so don't miss out!
It's also a fabulous opportunity for early TVR owners, like you Steve, to show the modern TVRs a clean pair of heels on the circuit tests! They are short and twisty, and too much power can be a disadvantage. We'd love to have a team of Granturas on the event, teaching later TVR owners about the marque's great history - and I'm sure they'll be delighted to have you there too. I certainly would be - I have fond memories of coming up to your place in the early 1990s when I was on Classic Cars magazine, to drive and photograph some lovely early cars, including a Vixen and an early Tuscan, if memory serves me right...

Yes, understood, costs do add up when you have to add getting there and back - though of course it then becomes a 14-day trip!
One thing I must pick up on, though - this is NOT a Regularity Rally!! Far from it - it's pure map navigation, much of it very straightforward but you do need to go the right way and there's the odd little tricky bit for the experienced crews. There is NOOOOOO regularity whatsoever. I don't like it, I've done plenty of it in the past as both driver and navigator and while sometimes it is a delight and great fun, often it is extremely frustrating and boring and occasionally it is downright dangerous (either far too tight timing on public roads with other traffic, or far too slow on public roads with other traffic). We run to our own competitive formula that combines navigation with endurance and of course the special tests on private circuits.
The fact that Willy Cave - surely the world's most experienced rally navigator, co-driver to stars such as Paddy Hopkirk in the 1950s/60s and still teaching rally navigation today at age 85 - absolutely loves the event, has done it twice and is looking for a drive in 2013 if anyone will take him, is I feel a valid tribute that we have got the competitive formula right without having to resort to Regularities...
What a shame you weren't able to come with the microcars in 2008 - it was enormous fun and really was an epic event - those little cars did the same route the TVRs will do, in the same number of days, and some of the smaller-engined ones (like 197cc Heinkels) were down to 12mph climbing the passes - and there were a lot of passes... It'll be a blast in TVRs!
And yes, I remember the shoot with the Marcos - brilliant. Simon Childs took the photos, I think. Unfortunately I left Classic Cars 14 years ago, so not sure I'd have much influence in getting photos out of them now!
Still hoping you'll change your mind about LBL (and don't forget, those costs are for two people, so even if you do run up a £6K total, your co-driver should pick up half of that!), but if not, hope our paths will cross somewhere before too long!
All best
Malcolm

Thanks, Steve - yes, the points for early or late arrival are only on the circuit tests, where we give a target time: it keeps insurance companies happy to say that there is only one car on the track at a time and you are required not to exceed 40mph average, but on a very twisty track that can actually be quite hard (and great fun) to achieve!
On the road, there are no penalties for early arrival and we simply have a check-in 'window' at the hotel at the end of the day. There is a penalty for missing it, but that's more because we want to make sure everyone has arrived safely, as we will start phoning mobiles and sending out search parties if anyone is missing! For the microcars in 2008, that check-in window was a real challenge to achieve some days, but all the XKs and E-types made it without problems this year and we of course expect the TVRs to do the same!

Not sure of the total numbers however there are enough for Malcolm to run the event so everything is happening i am sure there will be late entries as the larger the field and range of Models would be fantastic if all periods where represented from the earliest to the latest.
Hope to meet some of the other entrants at Zolder and Spa later in the year.

This seems to have gone quiet. What are the final numbers. Still time for any late stragglers. Malcolm has extended deadline. Come on this is a TVRCC supported event.
Thank you Steve Yes just spoken with Malcolm and there have been a couple of cars drop out due to work commitments to date along with the post 80s cars from UK Belgium and Brazil my 3000s is the only pre 80s car entered so far so
come on Guys and Girls we really need to show the newer TVRs what we can do.Its not as if we can do it another year as this is the one and only oppertunity to show what we can do in this amazing Classic Recreation of this Historic Rally.

Not sure what you are thanking me for, I haven,t done anything. I,ve been in communication with Malcolm throughout but I made my position clear from early days. Its just a pity the TVRCC overestimated the potential interest.
I am now well on the way to organising 2 European trips for "classic TVRs" for 2013.
Just thanking you for encouraging others to get involved as it would be great to see more older cars taking part.I am now well on the way to organising 2 European trips for "classic TVRs" for 2013.
