How do they work?

And how do you download them and then run them?

Want to test out a peice of software before I buy it to make sure it works.

Go to cnet.com/downloads search for a bit torrent client, download (free), install.
Go to suprnova.org, download whatever.
Speed increases the more you download, intially usually 1kbit/s but incraeses, I usually get 45k/s seen reported speeds of 300k/s.
It works as a P2P network

However I have noticed that since downloading XP SP2 most of the trackers now don't seem to work.

Great for getting full series or new movies etc, generally large files, a DVD or CDRW a great advantage with some of the films.

Changed from Bittorrent to BitComet and downloads have now resumed, strange but not complaining

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

BitTorrent works at it's best (this applies to all clients) when your machine accepts incoming connections on ports 6881-6889 (check the values). The firewall in SP2 might be contributing to the previous poster's problem.

Also try www.torrentreactor.net/
