Hi all
i Have an Xjr on a classic policy with 5,000 miles a year on it, even though i have other cars and dont use it for work i find that ive done 4,500 miles in it already. thats a lot of petrol :-(
runs out of tax end of november and insurance is due in march.
i cant increase the mileage allowance, so do i tax it and drive 40 miles a week just to keep it ticking over, which with the cost of the tax is probably most expensive 500 miles worth of fuel.
or do i sorn it and leave it sitting on the drive for 3 months, and do any tidying up needed to it?

other than this thread, what evidence would the insurance company have to say what the mileage was when the policy started?

in my case when i start a limited mile policy you have to declare the current mileage :-(

outdoors on a drive, i can buil a pergola type scaffold cover or put in under a cover, but wont discs rust, brakes stick, petrol degrade, rubber degrade, need another battery conditioner, then it all starts to add up to cost of the tax :-)

How much to cancel the policy and start a fresh? I doubt it's more than the penalty for exceeding your millage limit. Have you tried phoning your insurer to ask?

Just drive it down and back your road for like 50 metres weekly.

Might help with the sitting about problem. But have it sorn.

I truly hope you are not suggesting the OP does something illegal are you?

If i cancel the policy it wont be insured, i dont want that, and nor would i do anything illegal, also i dont think 50 metres would help as it wont have warmed up enough and its probably not a good idea to start it on the drive and leave it running.

Simple, drive it for 500 miles then cancel the policy and start a new one immediately with a higher mileage allowance?

Why can you not increase the mileage allowance?

Tax it and take it for the odd run over the winter to keep it running well.

The policies I've used, if you think you're going to go over the mileage limit, a quick call to the insurance co with credit card in hand to up it to the next mileage boundary has usually solved the problem.

You could consider the use of a "legitimate mileage correction company"...... I hear they will put any number you like on......

On a serious note it is probably best to see how much increasing the mileage limit will be, add on the cost of tax and fuel and then decide. I'd be reluctant to leave a car sat around all winter as it tends to do more harm than good.

ive tried topping it up to the next level, but they say i cant.
if i just drove it and did not declare the mileage, if i had an accident wouldnt the insurers wiggle out?
i like the idea of cancelling and starting a new policy best so far :-)thanks Otari

Have you phoned your insurer? I was about to exceed the limit on my policy as I'd set it according to what I used my previous car for.

Quick call and I asked the question if I could increase the limit or remove it. It would have cost me the same admin fee to change it either way (£40 if memory serves) so I went unlimited. This wasn't on a classic policy though but I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to increase it on that.

ETA - You've just posted that you've spoken to them and they can't increase it. Do they not like taking your money???

+1 seems like the most sensible idea to me. Sitting on a drive through winter is no good for a car.
