I've always loved split rim wheels, and if they have a nice dish even better. Sadly I've yet to have a car with a set. frown

So what are your favourites, or are you lucky enough to have a set?

I'll start with some classics...

I love them, but they look so, so wrong on some cars. On Jap cars (but not rally reps) yes, yes, yes. On a Golf, No, no, no.

I've heard they are (or were at the time they were popular) stronger and lighter than single-piece extruded wheels. Is this still the case? I'd imagine with wheel technology now, split rims are probably heavier and not as strong as high-end single piece wheels.

I hear they are a bugger to look after too, how do you keep them clean around the studs? And how often do you have to clean them to stop the rim corroding? I've seen some shocking looking neglected wheels in my time.

The picture above explains. A benefit is you can change the width of the wheel. Tbh though I doubt this is that important to most owners. For me they just look good.

After every drive probably! I'm a bit lazy when it comes to cleaning my car, I'm a driver not a detailer, and seeing those gorgeous wheels getting manky would just annoy me. That said, if I bought a car that already had some equipped I'd make the effort with them, or get one with a black wheel centre so the dirt was not so obvious.

My split rims don't have studs. They're a piece of piss to keep clean. Actually maybe they aren't split rims, but just deep dish alloys?

I think a lot of wheels are designed to look like split rims but are actually single-piece.

If they aren't bolted together they aren't split rims.

But, not all that appear to be bolted together are actually bolted together. wink

That's probably it then. Not that I mind. For some reason, I think I've always thought "split rims = deep dish".

I have a set of BK wheels which have hex-socket cap heads glued in to recesses all round the wheel. They are single peice cast wheels.

I must stress that they came free with a car I bought, and will be on it when I scrap it. Not my sort of thing at all.

Indeed, a few companies can make wheels with hidden bolts. Braid wheels in Spain for example.

Just one. When they're taken apart like that, is there a special way to put them back together? I mean, do the joins need sealing and the bolts torqued or something?
