Totally different beasts but I like them both!

I do low miles though- less than 10000 miles a year.

M3 or 330i for less than 10k, 330d is wasted for that amount of milage, albeit a great car, and the other is wrong wheel drive so automatically fails. smile

I have a E46 330Cd and love it, didn't think I would but its really very good, I remapped it as well so that helps.

Less than 1,000 miles a year.

Honestly hire a sports car it will be miles cheaper than insurance servicing tax mot not to mention depreciation and loss of interest on your purchase price.

another vote for 330i, failing that the Golf GTi is a very capable machine but probably no more frugal than the 330i day to day

Instead of the golf consider an audi s3. Forget the oil burner but consider the 330i.

GTI is fun, the 330d is a boring rep-mobile. As mentioned by others, 330i would be better bet comparison & then it's down to personal preference.

Seems strange so many people think the petrol is the better option? With a simple remap my 330Cd is making 271 bhp and 380 ftlb, making it every bit as fun to drive as a petrol, quite a bit quicker as well and still averaging 41mpg.

Maybe it's the tractor noises and soulless power delivery, or the boring rep mobile status?

Hardly the most exciting noise in the world, cold they sound a little rough but soon as they are warm they sound much better, I was actually shocked to find when revved the 6 cylinder still have a nice growl to them, I came from an Alfa and TVR so normally am used to hearing the exhaust note and half expected to hate the 330. Not sure why the power delivery is soulless, the nice flat torque curve above 2000rpm feels very similar to the way my old V8 delivered its power and much better than the 4 pot VAG engines I've driven before. Having tracked mine I can't say there was any issue with the way the power is sent to the wheels, apart from the fact it would benefit from a LSD.
