Hi

Not sure if we should visit the vet or if I'm paranoid. (15 week old terrier x puppy)

He sometimes stands on 3 legs lifting the rear nearside.
Now when he's running in the park he kind of "crabs" a bit at an angle. No limping or other signs of lameness.

It seems to be quite a common trait in Jack Russells, so might be a throw back to that?

If you're worried/think he's in pain get it checked by a vet.

Tilly, our JRT, used to do that. It gradually got worse as she got older. When she was about 18 months old she had an op on her knee to correct a luxating patella. No hopping since.

It didn't cause her a problem when she had it, it was more a case of preventative maintenance. That paritcular problem could have caused her knee to wear out prematurely.

Probably worth having it checked at some point.

Agree as above however he is quite young to be showing it ( though poss may be due to a growth spurt)

I would monitor for a bit, if he starts going it more and more get him checked. However if you continue to feel concerned (natural reaction) then get him checked for peace of mind (not a bad thing to do)

Thanks. Had a few growth spurts! I will monitor (still a bit worried bout walking him too much) and may discuss with the Vet after xmas

She examined him for a luxating patella & looked at his gait and could not find any problems. bounce
She didn't see the need for x-rays so we will just keep an eye on him.

put my mind at rest re walking him (Mrs AF thinks he has too much exercise) and said 40 mins twice a day was ok and actually if he has this condition a decent muscle tone would help not hinder.

One of my Jack Russells does this when he's running, he lifts his rear near leg as though he's injured. A couple of other terriers we walk with do the same, I get the impression it may be some sort of feigning injury to either put predators off or to fool prey.

Feigning injury sounds a bit odd (to my uneducated mind)
Predator thinks oh "poor thing" bit of a limp I won't chase him today.

It really would be a good way to fool prey however because they will only notice when he's running away scratchchin q.e.d.

The only other reason I can think of is that's the terrier way of giving you the finger as he does do it when I call him and he decides he's not ready to come back.
