So, my 159 is almost due replacement. Although I love it, I think I'll change cars so the long and tiresome (;)) journey of looking for a new car has begun.

The shortlist in the end contained (all second-hand) the Phaeton, C6, Superb and CLS. In the end these two won when doing man-maths on the taxes and insurance here in Belgium.

But, I'm really thorn between the two, and I got the feeling I'll regret not getting the other one when getting one of them.

Some pro's and cons:

Jag
+ Looks stunning
+ It's a Jaaaguaaar
- Bit more expensive in purchase due to newer model
- Has to be the 3.0D as it's better for taxes

Lexus (3rd gen GS):
+ Equipped like nothing in the price bracket
+ POWER
+ 3.5L V6 Petrol
- Heavier on the fuel
- Little bit more expensive on taxes and insurance
- Looks a bit dull, yet not ugly

So, vfm the Lexus is a better car, and it's some serious power for Autobahn eating with little repercussion in terms of taxes.
I'll surely try and land myself a test drive in either. I've been a passenger in the XF but haven't been in a GS yet.
The 159 will go at least another year though, but you know how it is biggrin.

Lexus for me. Mostly because it's not a diesel.

I don't often hear of people cross-shopping a Jaguar and a Lexus. Personally I'd take the Jaguar because I always get a cold feeling from Lexus, but that's subjective.

I know, I'm just looking at a car that can comfortably take 4 adults. I have no bias for german/japanese/others whatsoever, so I often end up with weird short lists biggrin.

Tbh the lexus looks just too good equipped to NOT take, with that power, things like adaptive CC standard,...

Out of these two I'd say Jag. But tbh if buying a Jag I'd much rather a late x358 XJ, in either petro V6 or diesel V6 flavour.

Yeah, I can agree with that. As I said, my opinion is purely objective. I'm sure that you'd be very happy with either

There's some others that would be nice, but unfortunately taxes for businesses discriminate older cars. In fact, anything over 200g/km should be very special to be able to justify.

The other part of the scheme makes that 5 year old cars are the sweet spot actually.

Didn't the x358 XJ's end production in 2009? Although I don't know the Co2 ratings on them, but I believe they weigh less than the XF as the XF is built on the same platform as the S-Type was, while the XJ was on a Jaguar own platform and still retained the firms classic IRS setup.

I would take the Lexus - not much in it on real-world fuel consumption. Spritmonitor.de returns the following averages:

Jag 32.2 mpg

Lexus 31.7mpg and will cost less to fuel overall since petrol is cheaper than diesel.

Plus the Lexus is quicker and will have a much better transmission. Mind you, check out the size of the boot before you commit......

yes Found them, but even the 2.7D puts out over 200, while the petrols go towards 300 smile.
Even so, I'd prefer the XF over them.

A guy I know with the GS450h reckons he's lucky to average 25mpg - on a motorway it'll do 30+, but it's thirsty around town. I've been in it, and purely on that basis would choose the Jaguar. The Lexus is a paragon of build quality, but I just didn't warm to it at all.

The GS450h does seem like a good choice - cheaper tax and v.good town economy due to the hybrid stuff. I went to look at one and actually really liked the drive, but then got out and looked in the boot. It's absolutely tiny.

And by tiny I mean, it's about the same size as a Clio, due to the batteries being between the seats and the boot.

Go with the XF, the 3.0d is a cracking engine and you'll never tire of the gear selector rising up.... biggrin

IMO you'd be a bit silly to choose a Jaguar over a Lexus

Hardly surprising you're biased towards the Lexus!
