Why do Insurance Companies want my certificate back?
Discussion
So I changed my car insurance to have business cover included... all done. Now they want me to send them back my original certificate. Sounds sensible enough right?
Not when they never sent me one in the first place, it's all online! I've never printed the cert. off in the first place. So I explain this to lovely lady at my insurance company, who then asks me to print it off and then post it back to them!
It's ridiculous, do they not understand how computers and printers work? I know it's the law and all that, but surely in today's environment of self-service insurance companies this needs to be looked at.

Yes, it's bonkers.
Seems like one departments procedures have not been updated to fall into line with another departments upgrades.
Why don't you offer to email the original attachemtn back to her!
Seriously, probably easier to do as they ask rather than argue. Some battles ain't worth fighting!

It's a lack of common sense really, I have a feeling I know what insurer it is Not when they never sent me one in the first place, it's all online! Simply declaring you don't have the cert over the phone should be sufficient enough.
according to the letter i got from my insurer after i didn't accept their renewal and they sent me a letter today asking for the certificate they never sent me back, 'Failure to return the certificate of motor insurance or to provide them a statutory declaration of its loss or destruction is an offence under the road traffic act 1988'
Its not elephant is it? They used to do that to me. Something about it being an official document that is valid if its in your pocession or some crap. I was changing cars every few months and it was pissing me off. They would not give in unless you returned it. I found saying that i "lost it" was far easier

Yep this is what I got quoted, so I understand they have a process in-place to comply with this law. But in 1988 they didn't have a database of everyone's car insurance details. So some-one could use a cancelled certificate again and again (I know some people that did this to get a tax disc from the post office). Things have moved on, the law is left back in the eighties with a mullet and bad clothes on.ging84 said:

Just had the exact some thing - not a mainstream insurer that is named after a high ranking naval officer perchance?(Why did I not renew the policy? 50% increase in premium for going from a group 50 5.0l V8 SL500 to a group 35 2.2 turbo-diseasel SLK, which I insured for 50% less elsewhere. Idiots.)
