New Bass.. need advice

Arrived this afternoon,Yamaha BB425X






I've never bought new before and I'm having a few problems.
Are they supposed to be set up at the shop before shipping ? After tuning it I have a terrible fret-buzz on the B string, all the others seem fime its just the lower B even when played open, if i play it lightly it's not too bad, touching on the first fret and the rattle gets louder. Trus-rod adjustment or saddles ?
I don't want to muck it up

From experience buying instruments online they never come very well set up. I doubt it'd be the truss rod on something brand new, try raising the action first, if this fails get in contact with the company you bought it from.

The problem with on line sales .... cheaper, but without the service of a shop.

My advice would be to pay to have it set up, probably £25 to £40, but take it to a guitar repairer, as opposed to a shop if you can fine one locally. Otherwise you'll find a) the sat boy doing it or b) them taking it to the same repairer that you could have done, but sticking £10 or more on it for their trouble.

Every set up is different, depending on how you play, strings etc ... and you will find as your laying changes, so will your set up requirements

Just seen that you are in West Yorks, (i was at the Music College in Leeds 20 years ago ) ! The have an instrument technology course there, so there must be some decent repairers around the area.

Otherwise Paul Mann, used to be in Huddersfield, and was very good ... not sure if he is still there.

I had another try this evening, all the strings had to be re tuned (new strings), I've lifted the B string saddle a turn and its helped slightly but slight rattling on the first fret, plugged it into amp and can't hear the rattle.
I'll have a ride into Huddersfield town centre and get a second opinion.
It's a bit heavy but a really good sounding bass, waiting for the zoomb2u arriving now.

Have you had a look down the neck? It should be slightly concave if the truss rod is set correctly. Agree with saddle adjustment as the obvious course. Also worth letting it settle for a day if it's been traveling judging by the cardboard box.
