Over the last 2 days my heater doesn't seem to be getting as hot as it should.
Now I know the temperature outside has dropped but even so I still think it should be blowing a lot warmer than it is.

I've just done a pedal test and no codes were showing so I just got 000000.

I google search suggests it may be the thermostat that's at fault, so, do you reckon this is covered by the cars original 3 year warranty?
Of course I think it should be but has anyone had any similar dealings?

Bummer is though, that the warranty runs out on the December 2nd, so I've got to try and get the dealer to look at it tomorrow.

It may be the thermostat and if so then yes, it should be covered. That said it could be other things too

Could be an airlock (doubt if covered)
Could be the heater matrix (likely to be covered)

Its worth taking it in but with a few basic checks you could rule out a lot of things yourself

Given the current cold weather, does the car come up to temperature correctly ?

Well, if it had a bloody temperature guage then I'd love to tell you...!

It seems to be running fine though, can't say I've noticed anything adverse.

Mk5 astra right ?

Turn on the radio
Hold down the "settings" button on the centre console until you hear a beep
Now press BC button until temperature is displayed on the centre screen (4 presses on your car I think).

Car will take a while to warm up in this weather but should be running at mid 80s when up to temperature.

The problem will be convincing them that the the car is faulty. I remember this coming up when I owned an Alfa 145; thermostats stuck open quite often, but the dealers' view was that as it wasn't overheating, they didn't need to fix it.......

thanks, done that in the past before I swapped the head unit, and I can't now remember, due to not having those specific buttons now, if I've done it with the new unit. I think it's a combination of the steering controls now - I'll have to see if I can dig it out again.

Agreed, but if the car is running cool it'll either compensate and run richer, which is bad for economy and the cat or it runs lean, which is even worse!

I doubt there is anything wrong, its probably just that temperatures have dropped and it doesn't feel as warm as usual.

You're probably right and it's just my worrying side coming out.
I'll take it in the morning though and see what they say.

Someone on the Astra Owners Club has just said:

"I agree, sounds like the thermostat is stuck open. A good test would be to drive the car for 10 minutes then pull over with the engine running. Give the engine a few minutes to warm up and then see if the heater blows hot air (I'm guessing it will)? Then drive off and see if the heater air cools down again. In my experience this would indicate a thermostat problem."

...which seems to back up how it seemed to get warmer in slow moving traffic, and warmer still sat on the drive last night.

Yep, but that's not necessarily a warranty claim, until actual damage occurs frown

Right, left it with them this morning so they'll try and look at it today.

Bit of a faff really as I then had to call my Dad to give a lift into work, but had to do it today as if they looked at it next week (when the warranty has run out) then it wouldn't be covered - the service guy was quite specific about this, saying that Vauxhall were extremely vigilant to warranty claims.

So, I'll let you know how it goes...

Dealer's just rang me, apparently they can't find anything wrong - but have ordered a new heater motor anyway!
I just have to book it in for fitting when it arrives.

So, result, I think.

Heater motor? But I presume the motor is working fine!?

We have a MINI with a stuck open thermostat. The temp from the heater drops noticeably when you get up to speed in this weather. The temp gauge can drop from normal when sat at idle right down to below the quarter mark.

It seemed to be and I can only assume they've checked the obvious really, like leaving it running and see if the fan kicks in - is that how you check a thermostat?
It sounded like they were doing me a favour as it's out of warranty tomorrow.
I just wish I had the all important engine temperature gauge though, this way I'd have known if it wasn't getting up to temp as normal.

You know they plugged it in and when it didn't give a fault code immediately they didn't have a clue!

This is what worries me.

They'd know how to test a thermostat though - wouldn't they? Surely?
