Would love to return to hillclimbing at Harewood next year, my old race suit & helmet are well out of date.

Speaking to a Scrutineer the other week,
I need a helmet: Snell SA2010 (not KA) there are a lot on ebay but listed as "kart" helmet. Are these ok?
Suit: FIA 8856 2000: size 54 I think if anyone has a decent second hand one going cheap?
Gloves: guess new, any one suuggest some decent budget ones?

Need to keep costs down (don't we all) to make this possible.
Thanks

Dan Friel

Kart helmets are no good. Check out section 10.3.1 of the following for the standards:

http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/msa_forms/blueb...

Race suits. Keep checking ebay.. this time last year I managed to get a £350 unused suit for £100..

And I can recommend Max at www.racewear.co.uk for gloves and helmets.

To be honest I'd buy new. I know it's expensive but what cost is your safety and would you really want someone elses sweaty lid? If you find a suit in good nick then that's OK, are you racing a saloon or an open car?

Another good source of used equipment is in PH classified - motorsport/apparel.

Try Playskool Motorsport for cheap suits and gloves. Helmets are cheap from Hedtec. I'd be wary of eBay as there's a lot of fake kit doing the rounds. You don't want to find out it's fake either at scrutineering or (worse) when your head hits something or the car catches fire.

I'm intrigued, does anyone know why hillclimbers and sprinters have to wear gloves but us rallying types don't?

When I last competed hillclimbers didn't need gloves
I would probably buy a new lid but a s/h suit wouldn't worry me
It's a closed car now, used to be a 7.
How do I know the difference between a kart lid & a car one. th e BS I was given by the scrut ties with the ones I see on ebay (new) but then I see "ideal for kart racing"

Have a look on p.172 of the link posted previously and it shows the various helmet stickers that apply and the ones that won't.

I don't know, but the gloves requirement was new in 2010. I can only offer "because the Blue Book says so" as a response. Perhaps it's because you can run a standard road car with a 3 point harness in sprints and you need buckets in rallying, which differentiates the production classes. Also, there's sports racers and single seaters in speed events where the risk of fire and/or finger abrasions is probably greater. Having said that, the required gloves will provide no protection against anything other than fire - if your hand goes out the window, it's not going to help you!

You have extinguishers in the car, we don't (have to). At least that's my take on it.

Last year I bought race suit, gloves and shoes on ebay. I looked fairly much each day for about a month to get what I wanted.
The helmet I bought new, I would not buy a second hand helmet, you cant tell if its been dropped or hit but the structural integrity of it can be seriously degraded. Bell and V2 both do decent helmets at a reasonable price, I bought a V2 and have been really happy with it.

See you on a hill somewhere!
