Toyota's answer to the Hummer..........

Some Article said:
Toyota’s answer to the Hummer is on its way down-under.The FJ Cruiser, a tough-looking off-roader based on the more sedate Toyota Prado, will be here before the end of the year as part a strategy to inject some much-needed excitement into Australia’s number one car brand. The off-roader, which looks like a Tonka toy, will join the boxy Rukus small car in the local line-up as Toyota attempts to shake its plain vanilla image. The FJ Cruiser bucks the trend of the current breed of ‘soft-roaders’, which are traditionally 4WD lookalikes with little to no off-road capability.AdvertisementToyota spokesman Mike Breen says the FJ Cruiser will appeal to a different audience than its current 4WD line-up, which is suited to more conventional tastes.“The FJ Cruiser is built on a Prado platform, so it’s got the same level of capability that a Prado does off-road.“But it’s got an urban feel to it, a more urban look to it,” Breen says. There’s no word as yet on whether the FJ Cruiser will be offered in Australia in a two-wheel-drive variant, as it is in the United States.“Until now it’s only been available in left-hand drive, so we’re lucky to get it for Australia,” he says.It is expected that the FJ Cruiser will carry over the same engines from the US model – all of which are fitted with a 4.0-litre V6 engine with either a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. Whether Toyota Australia will offer a diesel option is not yet confirmed. Some of the notable elements of the FJ Cruiser include its clever ‘suicide’ doors – the rear doors open towards the back of the car, and there’s no middle pillar. The appearance of the car is an artistic and modern take on the classic FJ LandCruisers of old.Toyota admits the FJ Cruiser’s love-it-hate-it looks will undoubtedly have the same polarising effect on buyers as the Rukus. Toyota says the Rukus is like Vegemite; an acquired taste. The Rukus is a local version of a car sold in Japan as the Toyota bB, and re-badged in the US as a Scion xB.Scion is Toyota’s youth-oriented brand, which has been considered for Australia but ruled out because of the cost of establishing a new brand in Australia’s already crowded market. The Scion xB has become a bit of a cult-car among car modifiers in the US, and Thompson says the shape is already a hit."This is a car that's designed to be different, with a boxy shape that has become iconic," he says
Never seen one before and had to double look as I thought id seen a new type of Hummer. It was just outside of holywell green in elland if your interested smile

I've never seen one in the U.K. but when I was in the U.S. earlier this year they were everywhere. Not overly keen but I like that they look a bit different to the usual 4x4s.

Fantastic machines, but they really are for people who like fun.

Seen one or two in the UK. They really aren't meant to be a Hummer at all but a modern recreation and homage to these:

I've only seen one on the roads in the UK, but I think they look fantastic. If only they were a little smaller, I'd want to get one.

About the same size as a Disco 3.

They've been on sale for 5 years. MUCH too big for UK. Which makes it surprising there aren't more muppets buying them...

Been out longer than that in the US - great car. Test drove one a few years back now. Loved it!

You can still purchase the later incarnation of those, new from Toyota dealers, in certain markets. I was sorely tempted a couple of months ago when we were looking at an opportunity in Latin America.

I see a couple fairly regularly around Barton Mills on the A11 - presumably owned by an American from one of the local air bases. I rather like the look of them - something different with some road presence and much better looking than a Hummer.

These were everywhere when I was in California. Very nice and in no way too big for the UK. What would put me off is the unbelievably poor visibility.

Since all of the vehicles you have listed are IMO much too big for UK my point stands despite your childish swearing.

And as I said in my post, it is surprisng the "I need lots of metal" muppets haven't bought them.

Why don't you put something else where your mouth is and go and buy one - then come and tell us all how handy it is around Tesco's car park. I expect we'll see you in the "parent and child" spaces with all the other big 4x4 clowns.

You're right, it's no bigger than some of the other stupidly large cars currently available. But if it were a bit bigger than a Jimney and a bit smaller than a Rav4, it would make some sense as a cute toy that can actually off-road.

Because that's what it looks like it SHOULD be to me. Instead, it's a different face attached to a Landcruiser, which probably explains why it isn't for sale in the UK.
