Possible to track owners of private plates to make a bid?

I was hoping to buy a private plate that spelled my nickname but it doesn't appear on any of the private plate search sites as being available. I have checked and it isn't showing as being on an insured car, so this got my thinking that it could just be sat in someone's garage collecting dust. Is it possible to find the owners of plates through the DVLA and make a bid?

Are you sure it has been purchased already? It may be in the list of plates that the DVLA are yet to auction off. I'm still waiting for mine to come up...

Would be happy with that but was actually looking for W1 LBO or W11 LBO.
