I was driving from Brigton to Penzance today and I was on a stretch of motorway near portsmouth I spotted a bloody great big white building on a hill to the right of the motorway, it was a way away from me and I have no idea what it was.

It looked like a tall pyramid with a low building to the left.

Any ideas what I might have seen ? Sorry about the crap description, I have tried google maps but its not easy to work out exactly where I was.

It's a prototype/test site for Type 45's SAMPSON radar on Portsdown Hill.

Excellent ! I award you 10 internet points.

Thanks, I thought it looked military but could not really see what it was.

No problem.

st drive from Brighton to Plymouth, though the bit from Plymouth to Penzance is decent. Good roads at the Penzance end!

Yup, it once set my Road Angel going mental as it detected a "speed gun".

I agree....horrid drive from Brighton along the coast. I bl**dy hate driving over to Portsmouth & Southampton, roundabout after roundabout followed by a poorly surfaced very busy motorway.

I set off at 5am yesterday from Penzance and went to Bury st edmunds, dropped off two cars and then down to Clayton and stayed at the jack and Jill pub (Very nice rib eye steak) and this morning went from Clayton, down to Rustington picked up a car and then back down to Penzance.

got back at 6pm and am a bit tired ! Seen some fantastic scenery and at Clayton there is a railway tunnel and the entrance to the tunnel is a replica castle, bonkers but brilliant.

It's all part of Qinetiq's facility there. Quite a fascinating place, with great views over the Solent from the restaurant

Mick's Monster Burgers are worth a drive up there too.

I love the way all the radar kit looks like it's been stolen off a ship.
