Work experience in the Gas/oil industry

After a miserable 17 years in a profession that I despise, I've decided that now is the time to completely change careers. On the advice of a sage member of this site, I think HSE in the oil, gas and/ or mining industry may be my way forward. I have researched the NEBOSH qualifications but, prior to the committal of a lot of time and money, I feel that work experience would be vital to a) affirm my decision and b) guide my subsequent education choices and give a bit of insider knowledge.

So, I now come to you, cup in hand, to ask if anyone can help, please!
