I can go up to 55 maybe 60 inches. only fussed about image/colour quality.

We've just upgraded from panny vt42plasma to a Samsung es8000 55". Can't fault it. Easy to setup to get a picture that is better than the panny.

You've compared both, together, with settings adjusted to sensible viewing levels?

Yep. Had both in same room found some suggested settings on avforums. Calibrated by side by side watching of dark night. The Samsung is easily as good if not better than the panny imho. The panny was 4years old mind.

Aah it was the use of the word "is" and not the correctly used "was" that had me confuddled!

wink

What is the SD pic quality like on say freeview?

Just doing some research on the VT50 at the moment. Current set is a 42V10

I'll let you know once I've got her unpacked. biggrin

Having said that, the dealer showed some SD Sky and it looked absolutely fine although depends on the programming to be honest. Bluray was of course spectacular.

+1 and in my view they are more stylish than the functional looking Panasonics

Another vote for the Panasonic TX-P55VT50B here.
Just upgraded to one of these (from 13 year old Panasonic 36" CRT).
Preferred the picture to other screens, but demo rooms are not the most representative of what you'll see at home. What was visible though when looking at different screens was the black levels on the VT50 were very black - the black border and the picture when dark seemed to merge, whereas most other screens with a black surround you could see the black surround and the dark grey of the image rather than it being black (if this makes sense).
Advice generally from AV forums etc has been that if viewing in a very bright environment, then LED may be the way to go. Fortunately our room is not very bright and the plasma has a really good picture.
SD scaling as already mentioned depends quite a bit on source material - most channels are ok, but some like Food Network (Mrs C&C watches it) don't look great - but I'm sure that's the rubbish source material.
When looking for the screen, my only concern was for HD picture quality. I didn't care about 3D, but have been actually quite impressed with 3D performance also - got a Panasonic DMP-BDT500EB BluRay player at the same time.

Finally, whilst I was going to get it from John Lewis, my local Panasonic store was happy to match the current offer at the Panasonic store in Lakeside for £1999 including 6 year guarantee. Not sure whereabouts in the country you are, but this is in London, and apparently there are stores further up north offering similar prices (Bradford, Sheffield etc).

About to pull the trigger on a VT50 myself I think. I find the LED screens a bit too bright.

Anywhere in London/SE by any chance ?

Best place I have found to look at screens is Selfridges because it's in the basement and not got very bright lighting.

I'd like to see go somewhere that has a variety of sources though and happy to travel.

It's incredible that these manufacturers spend all this money on R+D and then on retailers to display their product who generally doing a horrendous job of it.

Weve just got a GT50 Panny and its absolutely fantastic. Incredible picture quality. We looked at many other brands of TV and even the lesser panny range, and the GT/VT stand out by a long way.

Went to look at a VT50 yesterday and got the plastic out....arrives on Wed biggrin

Looked good even with Freeview etc which is important in our house.

Think I'm going to get an Oppo 105 to replace my ancient DVD and CD players.

Currently torn between the Panny 50VT50 and the Sony KDL46HX853. The Panny seems to have a slight edge, but it's hard to find direct comparisons because one is plasma and one is LED.

Any views? Will be used in a regular living room, neither especially dark or light.

I purchased a 55" Samsung D8000 a year ago after looking at that and the Panasonic.

Very happy with my choice. It's a personal thing though and I did want ultra thin.

To my eyes, plasma looks more natural. LED looks a bit "over processed"

This 100%. Watching TV is ultimately supposed to be relaxing...the Samsung viewing experience is too intense/bright for me....looks more like animation to me.

A mate of mine bought a 55" Samsung 3D LED tv last year. Really odd experience watching it. I couldn't work out why to begin with,, but I think it was because the image it presented was sharper, brighter and more colourful than anything in the room. Or that I had ever seen in the real world. In short, it looked other worldly.

Right now we have a Sny KDL40X2000, which we've had since it came out. It produces a nice HD image, and does not produce an image that looks unreal. But it's time for a change.

Samsung TV's are set up by the manufacturer to function in bright shop lighting. You really need to work on the settings when you get them home but once done they are no different in image quality and colour saturation to Sony and Pany.
