Hi my car golf gtd 2008 vintage has thrown the dpf light up the other day, due to various reasons, decided to keep on trucking around central London for around 60 miles when check engine light came on prompting me to go to a garage.

My question is, do I try and give it a run on the mway anyway or leave it to see a mechanic first? Car is on 110k serviced on time, I actually have a dpf additive in the boot from a few months back that I never used

Thanks

If its the same system as my old 2007 VW van then I would imagine it now needs to go to a workshop to attempt a forced regeneration.

take it for a motorway blast first, at least 10 minutes at 70 mph should help the regeneration process and blow the soot out!

Use a lower gear on the motorway. Keep it around 3500 rpm for a few miles.

In our VW Caddy van we have hired at work at the moment there is actually a sticker on the sun visor that says if the DPF Light comes on drive in a lower than usual gear at a higher than usual revs until the light goes out, though it does also say do not stop the car until the light goes out and if a second engine light comes on too take it to a dealer.

Anyone on here know for definite that things can't get worse if you take it for a motorway blast first though?

This is what I would like to know
Thanks for the help everyone, will report în the next 45 minutes if I'll risk it and outcome. I normally deal with the dpf light 5th gear 2300 rpm, but I never had 3 lights on the dash

Just to add the reason you have three lights on the dash is probably because your vehicle has tried to regenerate three times but failed for whatever reason (DPF blocked, unsuitable regen driving conditions etc)...hence why workshop attention is now required.

You will have 3 light on, engine management, the DPF light and a flashing coil light.

I work for a VW diagnostics and repair specialist and unfortunately you will not get this DPF to regenerate now, the regeneration process is locked out.

You will need a forced regeneration (usually only a temporary fix, if it will regenerate at all) or DPF replacement / removal.

PM me if you want free impartial help, I deal with these systems all day, everyday and have friends that work in the same industry around the UK, one of them will be happy to help you out without wanting to charge you much more than beer money.

Sorry to hijack the thread slightly, but is it possible to remove a DPF from a DPF equipped car and run it without?

Can be done but you need someone to tell the ECU that the DPF has been removed.

How you finding the car after the removal of the dpf? TBH that's the sort of route I want to take if possible. Some claim improvements in both power and economy, any truth in that?

Does that make any difference at MOT time ?

As long as the software is correct and removal of the DPF carried out correctly there is no implications at MOT time.

Same for Bmw's.
£1500 for new dpf or
£600 for removal, remap and more power. smile
