Can somebody help me out so settle one of those arguments down the pub?

Is towing a disabled vehicle with a tow rope legal or illegal these days?

Towing by rope permitted but tow rope or chain shall not exceed 4.5 metres and not 1.5 metres unless rope/chain clearly marked. M.Veh Con and Use Regs 1986 Reg 86.

But bear in mind a "disabled vehicle" may still be a vehicle for purposes of Insurance, MOT and Excise Licence and require these items. Likewise on a M Way also is a "trailer" and not allowed in the offside lane where there are three or more lanes.

Here's a good One. We have a towbar fitted but never tow anything. Instead a cross bar is fitted and we carry a motor bike. Any towing laws for that??
