I tend to buy depending on content rather then a particular magazine. I agree with your thoughts on octane: dissappearing up its own auction report. Motor sport is a good, thorough read but very expensive for a monthly and I cannot justify it every month. I like the cheaper magazines too: the classic cars for sale etc but their articles can be inaccurate. But flicking through many, many cars for sale is a true pleasure of mine.
Good thread. I've been a subscriber to Octane since issue 6 so am reticent to give up but you've confirmed my suspicions that it's just not as chunky a read as it used to be. I always subscribed to MotorSport and always will, as far as I'm concerned it's the only place to read grown up journalism about all sorts or motor racing form F1 to Stock Cars. As for classic car mags I've subscribed to Classic Cars since my Aston was featured in it in Jan 2012 - seemed rude not to, but you've got me thinking about canning Octane. It's got very lightweight and introspective. The very reason I gave up my Evo subscription, it became more about the journalists than the cars they were writing about!

You can tell when Octane started it's decline - the letters page went done in quality significantly, you no longer had letters from Major Blenkinsop Farquarhaquarson Rtd. expanding on the background to the Le Mans Delahay which came a heroic 5th in the 1933 race and instead have people talking about their Dino and complimenting the Editor of the magazine (for the third time) for the excellent article in edition 192 featuring a picture of his their car. Oh and can they please have the "Yard 'o' Lead" pencil, or whatever this months give-away is, for letter of the month

Same here. Had loads from the early and mid 80s. When I moved house in 1998 I took them all down to the tip, along with a few dozen Car MEchanics which were my dad's from the 60s (let's change the front shoes on a Wolseley 1500-kinda thing) . Wish I hadn't as I'd love to read them now.As an aside, its always inteesting to read "old" classic car magazines: the pictures will never be as good (supercar classics excepted) but often they would be interviewing the people invovled, whereas these days they often refer to books or second hand news for the facts. An article by F Wilson McComb would always be worth reading, for example because he never assumed anything.

However, due to everything being online nowadays and only so many articles before they're regurgitated, I no longer subscribe but do buy when I see an interesting front cover!
